How do Indian citizens apply for a Australia visa?
Applies via: Embassy/official portal
Who handles applications in India
Australian Visitor visas (subclass 600) are applied for online through ImmiAccount with the Department of Home Affairs; you attach scanned documents and pay the application fee online, and the application is not processed until the fee is paid. You must be outside Australia when you apply and when the visa is decided. The Department tells you if you need to provide biometrics; VFS Global operates Australian Biometrics Collection Centres in listed countries, and India is not on the list (correct as of March 2026). The visa is digitally linked to the passport (no label). The Department of Home Affairs office at the Australian High Commission in New Delhi manages many visa and citizenship services for citizens of India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan; visa and citizenship enquiries go to the helpline +61 2 6196 0196.
Not available: Home Affairs says only New Zealand passport holders can get a visa on arrival, and all other passport holders, including Indians, must get the right visa before travelling to Australia.
eVisa / online visa
Available: Indians apply online through ImmiAccount for the Visitor visa (subclass 600) (online lodgement has been mandatory since 30 September 2021) and the visa is granted electronically, digitally linked to the passport with no label. India is not on the eligible-passport lists for the ETA (subclass 601) or eVisitor (subclass 651).
Visa-free entry
Not available: Indian passports are not eligible for the ETA or eVisitor, and Home Affairs says all passport holders other than Australian and New Zealand ones need a visa before travelling to Australia.
