Frequently asked questions

Everything travellers ask about Nepal Tourist Visa — fees, extension, multi-entry, max stay rules.

What is the Nepal Tourist Visa?

The Tourist Visa is Nepal's only entry visa for foreigners. Even if you intend to study, work, or do business, you enter on a Tourist Visa first and then change category at the Department of Immigration. Tourist visas are issued at TIA Kathmandu, 7 land borders (visa-on-arrival), or any Nepali Embassy / Mission abroad before travel.

How much is the Nepal Tourist Visa fee?

$30 for 15 days, $50 for 30 days, $125 for 90 days — all multi-entry by default. Children under 10 are free (except US citizens). SAARC nationals get 30 days free once per year. Chinese nationals get 150 days free per year. Visas are non-refundable.

How long can I stay in Nepal as a tourist?

Maximum total stay is 150 days per visa year (January–December). You can stack: arrive on a 90-day visa, extend up to 60 more days at the Department of Immigration ($3 per day, 15-day minimum). At 150 days you must leave — you cannot stay longer on a Tourist visa within the same calendar year.

Is the Nepal Tourist Visa multi-entry?

Yes — every Nepal Tourist Visa is multi-entry by default at no extra cost. You can exit to India or Tibet and re-enter Nepal within the validity window without paying again. To renew multi-entry on an extension, there's a $25 surcharge.

What documents do I need for the Tourist Visa?

Valid passport (6+ months validity, 2+ blank pages), one passport-size photo (35×45 mm white background), confirmed return / onward ticket, proof of funds for the stay (USD 50–100 per day), and the printed online arrival form receipt with barcode (pre-filled at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np/visa/online).

Can I extend my Nepal Tourist Visa?

Yes — at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (Kalikasthan) and the Immigration Office in Pokhara. Rate: $3 per day with a 15-day minimum. Late fine: $5 per day past expiry. Multi-entry surcharge for the extension: +$25. Max total stay 150 days per year.

What's the difference between Tourist Visa and other Nepal visas?

Tourist Visa is the entry permit for tourism, sightseeing, trekking, mountaineering, and visiting friends/family. For paid work you need a Working Visa (Non-Tourist), for investment a Business Visa, for full-time study a Student Visa, for family unity a Marriage/Relation Visa. ALL non-tourist visas require entering Nepal on a Tourist Visa first, then converting at the Department of Immigration.
