Italy Visa Travel Insurance for Indians: Cover and Cost
TL;DR

Italy requires travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000, valid throughout the Schengen territory for your entire stay and issued by an insurer on the list approved by Schengen consular posts in India. No official source fixes the premium, so compare quotes; the fixed costs are the € 90 / INR 9,630 adult visa fee and the INR 631 VFS service charge.

Key takeaways

  • Travel medical insurance is mandatory for an Italy short-term Schengen visa.
  • Minimum cover is EUR 30,000, valid throughout the Schengen territory for the entire stay.
  • Only insurers on the list approved by Schengen consular posts in India are accepted; VFS links an April 2026 list.
  • No official source fixes the premium; the published charges are the € 90 / INR 9,630 adult visa fee and the INR 631 VFS service charge.
  • File the signed VFS-format declaration on travel health insurance together with the policy.
Travel medical insurance is mandatory for an Italy Schengen visa. Your policy must cover at least EUR 30,000, be valid across the whole Schengen territory for every day of your stay, cover repatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or death, and come from an insurer on the approved list used by Schengen consular posts in India.

The rules below come from the VFS Global Italy pages and the Embassy of Italy in New Delhi. Fees and processing times are as published on those official sources, checked on 10 October 2026. For visa categories, jurisdiction and the full document list, see our Italy visa guide for Indian applicants.

The cover Italy asks for, line by line

The requirement is the same for tourist, business and family-visit applications on a short-term Schengen C visa. The Embassy's tourist checklist, published through VFS, lists the policy as overseas medical insurance with a minimum of Euro 30,000 for emergency hospital and repatriation expenses. Put your policy schedule next to this table before you book an appointment:

ConditionWhat Italy requiresWhere to look on your policy
Sum insuredMinimum EUR 30,000Medical expenses limit or sum insured
TerritoryValid throughout the Schengen territory, not Italy aloneGeographical scope or area of cover
PeriodThe entire stayPolicy start and end dates
RisksRepatriation, urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or deathBenefits table
InsurerOn the list approved by Schengen consular posts in IndiaInsurer's registered name
Extra formDeclaration on travel health insurance, in the VFS formatSigned separately and filed with the policy

EUR 30,000 is a floor, not a target. A policy with a higher limit meets the rule; one with a lower limit does not, however good the rest of the cover looks.

Why the approved-insurer list matters more than the price

Italy does not accept any policy that simply reaches EUR 30,000. It accepts policies from insurers on the list approved by the Schengen consular posts in India, and VFS links the current version (an April 2026 list when we checked) from its Italy pages. In practice:

  • Open the list from the VFS Italy page for North India or the VFS page for West and South India, and find your insurer by its exact registered name.
  • If you already have travel cover through an employer, a bank card or an annual multi-trip plan, check the insurer against the list and the policy against the table above. Do not assume it qualifies.
  • Ask the insurer for a certificate that states the Schengen scope, the sum insured and your travel dates clearly, so each condition can be verified at a glance.

What the policy costs, and the fixed charges around it

No official source fixes the premium. The insurer sets it, and it varies with your age, the number of days covered, the sum insured and any add-ons. That is why this guide does not quote a premium: get quotes from two or three insurers on the approved list for your exact dates, and compare the benefits table, not only the price.

The rest of the Italy bill is published. Budget for these alongside the premium:

ChargeAmountNotes
Visa fee, adult (Categories A, B or C)€ 90 / INR 9,630Demand draft favouring VFS Global Services Private Limited, or cash at VFS; not refunded if refused

The EUR-INR rate behind the visa fee is adjusted periodically, so confirm the rupee amount on the VFS page in the week you apply. Because the visa fee is not refunded on refusal, also ask the insurer before you pay whether the premium is refunded, or the policy can be cancelled, if the visa is refused. Terms differ between companies.

Matching the policy dates to your itinerary

The entire stay is read against the travel itinerary and the return flight reservation in your file, so the three documents should tell the same story.

  • Start cover on the day you arrive in the Schengen area and end it no earlier than the day your return flight leaves.
  • If you are also visiting France, Austria or another Schengen country, those days must fall inside the same policy period.
  • If your dates change after purchase, ask the insurer to amend the policy so it matches the new itinerary before you submit.
  • You can lodge the application up to six months before travel, and short-term visas take 15 working days (extendable up to 45). The policy must exist on the day you submit, because it is part of the file, so buy it once your dates are firm.

For the flight, many applicants submit a verifiable flight reservation rather than a paid ticket, since embassies generally advise against buying non-refundable tickets before the visa decision. Requirements vary, so follow the official checklist; a verifiable flight reservation fixes your dates without paying the full fare. Tourist applicants also need confirmed hotel bookings, which are mandatory for that category.

Filing the insurance with your VFS application

Italian visas are lodged by appointment at VFS Global centres in New Delhi, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Kochi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad, and decided by the Italian mission for your state. The Embassy in New Delhi handles Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh; the Consulates General in Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore handle the rest. You must apply where you have lived continuously for the last six months and include proof of that residence.

Insurance appears in two places in the file:

  1. The policy or certificate itself, from an approved insurer.
  2. The declaration on travel health insurance, printed in the VFS format and signed. It sits next to the processing time (waiver) declaration, which is also a VFS form.

The rest of the tourist checklist (application form, photo, passport, cover letter, latest 3 months' pay slips, 3 years' ITR, six months' bank statement stamped by the bank, hotel bookings) is covered in the Italy guide linked above. Work from the Embassy's tourist document list as the official version.

Insurance mistakes to avoid

  • A limit below EUR 30,000. Check the medical and repatriation limit itself.
  • Italy-only cover. The policy must be valid throughout the Schengen territory.
  • Dates that stop short. A policy ending before your return flight does not cover the entire stay.
  • An insurer missing from the approved list. Meeting the cover rules is not enough on its own.
  • Forgetting the declaration. The VFS-format declaration on travel health insurance is a separate document from the policy.
  • Leaving children out. Minors apply with their own application signed by both parents, so check every traveller is named on a policy.

Long-stay D visas (study, employment, family reunion and others) have their own VFS checklists, which our dataset does not itemise. If you are applying for a D visa, take the insurance wording from that category's checklist rather than from this short-stay summary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy the travel insurance after my Italy visa is approved?

No. The policy is one of the documents you submit at VFS, together with the signed declaration on travel health insurance, so it has to exist on the day you lodge the application. Buy it once your travel dates are confirmed.

Do I need Schengen-wide cover if I am only visiting Italy?

Yes. Italy requires a policy valid throughout the Schengen territory for the entire stay, even if every night of your trip is in Italy. An Italy-only policy does not meet the requirement.

Do children under six need insurance for an Italy visa?

The visa fee for children under six is € 0 / INR 0, but the published requirements do not exempt children from travel medical insurance. Cover each child with a policy that meets the same EUR 30,000, Schengen-wide conditions as the adults.

How long does Italy take to decide a tourist visa?

VFS quotes 15 working days for short-term Schengen visas, extendable up to 45, and the Embassy says decisions on C visas are generally reached within 15 calendar days. Applications can be lodged up to six months before travel, so there is no need to leave it late.
