Quick answer

The Langtang Valley trek is a 7-10 day Tamang-village route into the Langtang National Park, north of Kathmandu near the Tibetan border. The trail follows the Langtang Khola through forest and yak pastures to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), with a side-trip option to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) for a 360° pano of Langtang Lirung (7,234 m), Langtang II (6,571 m), and Naya Kang. Yatra For Fun books the trek with the Langtang NP + TIMS permits, English-speaking Tamang guide, porter, teahouse accommodation, and three meals daily, for NPR 50,000-100,000 per person.

Why this trek

Langtang is the closest big-mountain trek to Kathmandu — a 7-hour jeep ride to the trailhead at Syabrubesi vs the 30-minute Lukla flight (and its weather-delay risk) for Everest or the 30-minute domestic flight to Pokhara for Annapurna. For trekkers on a tight schedule (one week), Langtang delivers the most genuine Himalayan experience per day of leave. The valley was devastated by the 2015 earthquake (the village of Langtang was buried by a landslide, killing 300+ residents). The reconstruction has built back stronger — teahouses are new and well-maintained, the trail is in excellent condition, and visiting now directly supports the Tamang community's recovery economy. The Langtang memorial chorten in the new village is a moving stop. Yatra books the standard 7-day Syabrubesi → Kyanjin → Kyanjin Ri → Syabrubesi itinerary for fit trekkers, or the 10-day version that adds the Gosaikunda lakes lobe (a holy Hindu pilgrimage site at 4,380 m) for a combined trek-and-cultural experience.

About the route

The trek starts with a 7-hour jeep ride from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (1,550 m). Day 1 walks 5-6 hours up the Langtang Khola through rhododendron forest to Lama Hotel (2,470 m). Day 2 climbs through the bamboo and pine to Langtang village (3,430 m, the reconstructed post-earthquake village). Day 3 ascends to Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), the trek's high village, set in a wide yak-pasture valley with Langtang Lirung (7,234 m) directly above. Day 4 is the optional sunrise climb of Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) for a 360° panorama — the only high-altitude effort on the trek. Days 5-7 retrace to Syabrubesi and the jeep back to Kathmandu. Total walking distance is approximately 70 km. Daily walking time is 5-7 hours. No technical sections; the trail is well-graded and teahouses are reliably spaced every 2-3 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Langtang the closest big-mountain trek to Kathmandu?

The trailhead at Syabrubesi is 117 km north of Kathmandu — a 7-hour jeep ride on the Trisuli highway, no domestic flight required. By contrast, EBC needs the Lukla flight (which has weather-delay risk) and Annapurna treks need the Pokhara domestic flight or 6-hour drive. For trekkers on a 7-9 day schedule, Langtang delivers the most Himalayan time per day of leave.

How much does the Langtang Valley trek cost in NPR?

NPR 50,000-100,000 per person (2-pax group, mid-tier). The lower end is the 7-day fast route in shoulder season; the upper end is the 10-day version with Gosaikunda lakes extension. The breakdown above shows permits (NPR 5K), transport (8-12K), guide (18-25K), porter (12-16K), accommodation (5-8K), meals (14-22K), and Yatra concierge fee (8K).

Is it ethical to trek Langtang after the 2015 earthquake?

Yes — and the Tamang community actively wants visitors back. The April 2015 earthquake buried Langtang village under a landslide (300+ residents killed). The valley has rebuilt: new teahouses, a memorial chorten at the village site, and a reconstructed cultural centre. Tourist revenue is the primary economic driver of the rebuild. Yatra's local Tamang guides are often from the affected community and the trek directly funds family livelihoods.

What's the maximum altitude on Langtang?

4,773 m at Kyanjin Ri (the optional summit on day 5). Maximum sleeping altitude is Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m. Both are below the 4,500 m AMS sleeping-altitude threshold, so altitude sickness risk is low. No mandatory acclimatisation day is built into the standard itinerary (vs Namche/Dingboche on EBC) because the elevation gain is gentle.

When is the best time to trek Langtang?

March-May (spring) and September-November (autumn). Spring brings the famous rhododendron bloom on the lower Lama Hotel section (entirely covered in pink/red flowers in April). October is the absolute clearest weather for the Kyanjin Ri summit. Avoid December-February (heavy snow at Kyanjin, some teahouses shuttered) and monsoon (landslide risk on the highway).

Can I trek Langtang solo without a guide?

Since April 2023, foreign trekkers in Nepal's national parks require a licensed guide. Yatra For Fun pairs you with a Kathmandu-based Tamang guide who knows the valley culturally and topographically. We can add a porter at +NPR 12-16K for the trek if you'd rather carry only a daypack.

What's the Gosaikunda extension and is it worth adding?

Gosaikunda is a holy Hindu pilgrimage lake at 4,380 m, in the eastern part of Langtang National Park, accessed via the Lauribina La pass (4,610 m) from Kyanjin Gompa. Adding 3 days, it offers spectacular Hindu pilgrimage culture (the lake is sacred to Shiva), a high pass-crossing experience, and a longer trek for relatively modest extra cost (+NPR 30-45K). Yatra recommends it for trekkers with 10+ days who want a richer cultural mix and a high-pass crossing.

What gear do I need for Langtang?

Same as ABC: boots, daypack (30-35 L), -10°C sleeping bag, down jacket, hard-shell layer, gloves, hat, sunglasses (Cat 3 or 4), trekking poles. Yatra rents the bulky items (sleeping bag, down jacket, poles) for NPR 250-500 per item per day from our Kathmandu depot.
