This huge crater is like a living biology textbook, showing us what an ecosystem is and what ecological balance means. There are about 25,000 large animals that inhabit this geographically relatively semi-enclosed area. Carnivores, herbivores, herbaceous plants, and animal manure as fertilizer form a self-sufficient ecosystem that has existed for tens of thousands of years.

However, after the migration, the Serengeti regained its true character as one of Africa's most striking animal sanctuaries: large herds of buffalo, small herds of elephants and giraffes, and thousands of horned wildebeest, East African wildebeest, impala and Gratwe's gazelle.
