## Overview

Schengen (short-stay, up to 90 days) applications are booked and submitted at VFS Global Visa Application Centres; applications can be submitted at any VFS centre across India regardless of residence and are all forwarded to the German Consulate General in Mumbai for a decision. The VFS service charge is pre-paid when booking the appointment and the visa fee is paid at the appointment. National (D, over 90 days) visas are applied for online through the Consular Services Portal (CSP) where available, then submitted at an on-site appointment with the German mission responsible for your place of residence. Since June 2026 Indian nationals no longer need an airport transit visa for a layover at a German airport.

## Visa on arrival, eVisa and visa-free entry

- **Visa on arrival:** Not available: German Missions in India state that Indian citizens require a visa for Germany, so it must be obtained before travel - a Schengen (C) visa through a VFS Global centre in India for stays of up to 90 days, or a national (D) visa for longer stays.
- **eVisa / online visa:** Not available: there is no German eVisa for Indian passport holders. Schengen applicants fill in the VIDEX form online but must lodge the application at a VFS Global centre and give biometrics in person (unless fingerprints were collected in the last 59 months); most national (D) visas are applied for online through the Consular Services Portal (digital.diplo.de) but still end with an on-site appointment, with the passport returned with the decision.
- **Visa-free entry:** Not available for ordinary passports: Indian citizens require a visa; only holders of Indian diplomatic passports are exempt (bilateral agreement). Since 3 June 2026 Indian nationals no longer need an airport transit visa for a layover at a German airport when travelling on to another country. Indians holding a long-stay visa or residence permit issued by another Schengen state need no separate visa for short stays in Germany of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

- A spouse travelling for tourism on the same dates may be booked along in either urgent category; other purposes booked in these categories are rejected by VFS
- Urgent categories give an appointment, not fast-track processing (average up to 15 days); otherwise special appointments only for compelling, unplanned medical or humanitarian reasons via the contact form

### Status tracking and passport return

- Schengen: status can be checked via the application tracking on the VFS website; written inquiries are answered only after the 15-day regular processing period; passports are returned only via VFS
- National (D) visas: no online tracking; status inquiries are not answered within the first three months; you are notified automatically, then submit the passport for visa stamping (e.g. at VFS) when the Consulate emails you

### After a refusal

- Two options: reapply at any time (no cooling or locking period), or file a lawsuit at the Administrative Court in Berlin within one month of receiving the refusal (court fee currently EUR 483, paid by the plaintiff regardless of outcome)
- The free remonstration procedure was abolished in India from 1 January 2024
- The reason is stated in the refusal letter; the visa section gives no further explanation. German Missions say most rejections result from incomplete or unverifiable documentation
- The visa fee is not refunded after a refusal

### Indian citizens living outside India

- Schengen: persons not residing in India may apply in India only if lawfully present and able to justify not applying in their country of residence (consulate's discretion; scheduling constraints or long travel are usually not sufficient)
- National (D) visas: in the Consular Services Portal choose your country of residence, not citizenship (e.g. an Indian living in Dubai picks United Arab Emirates)

### Agents

- German Missions: it is not necessary to use an agent to apply for a visa; all necessary forms and information are free of charge
- The German Consulate strongly warns applicants who use visa agents to prepare applications or book appointments: misconduct by the agent is the applicant's responsibility and may invalidate bookings or lead to refusal

### After arrival on a national visa

- National visas are usually issued for 90 days up to one year; register with the residents' registration office immediately after entering and book an appointment with the foreigners' authority to apply for a residence permit
- A national visa allows travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period

### Biometrics, interviews and originals

- Schengen: all applicants in India appear in person at VFS to give biometrics (fingerprints and photo); fingerprints collected within the previous 59 months can be copied, in which case a representative with an authorisation letter may submit; children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting
- Schengen: the visa section may request additional documents or call the applicant for an interview in individual cases
- National visas: applicants attend the appointment/interview themselves (relatives may accompany only to the gate of the visa section); one appointment per applicant and minors, including babies, must be present
- National visas: originals or copies certified by a German authority are needed (Indian notarised copies not accepted); attestation or apostille of Indian documents is not required, but documents may be verified for genuineness where the checklist says so
- Refusal to appear for a visa interview may result in rejection of a national visa application

## Photo specifications

- **Size:** 35x45 mm
- **Background:** White
- Two recent passport size photos for each person included in the application (VFS)
- Face coverage 70-80%
- Not older than 6 months
- Must meet biometric photo requirements; photos can be obtained at the Visa Application Centres

## Travel medical insurance

**Required:** Yes

Travel medical insurance valid throughout the Schengen territory for the entire stay, minimum coverage EUR 30,000; German missions accept Indian travel medical insurances only from the approved list of Indian travel insurance companies (e.g. Acko, Bajaj Allianz, HDFC ERGO, ICICI Lombard, New India Assurance, Tata-AIG etc., with age limits). Required even in transit cases (VFS).

## Processing time

- **Schengen visa:** 15 working days from the day of arrival at the visa section (excluding day of submission at VFS); transfer from VFS to the Consulate can take up to six working days. Apply not earlier than six months and not later than 15 working days before travel.
- **Schengen visa (embassy guidance):** It can take up to two weeks to process your Schengen visa, and even longer in individual cases
- **Student visa (national D visa):** No fixed processing time is published. German Missions in India say processing of national visas may take several months depending on the category; there is no online tracking and status inquiries are not answered within the first three months after filing. Appointments are allotted automatically and cannot be brought forward for a course start date (only extreme medical or humanitarian cases).
- **Work visa (national D visa: EU Blue Card, skilled worker, Opportunity Card):** No fixed standard time is published: national visas may take several months depending on the category, and status inquiries are not answered within the first three months. Employer pre-approvals shorten processing: with a fast-track pre-approval (Section 81a Residence Act) the mission offers a visa appointment within three weeks and as a rule decides within three weeks of the complete application (Section 31a Residence Ordinance); a Federal Employment Agency pre-approval can also shorten processing.
- **Schengen visa (FAQ detail):** German Consulate General Mumbai usually decides complete applications within 15 calendar days of receipt at the visa office (Visa Code standard; extendable up to 45 days in individual cases). Files lodged at VFS Mumbai reach the Consulate the next day; from other VFS centres allow +2/+3 days for transport. Applying at least three weeks before travel is recommended; if travel is within 15 calendar days of the file reaching the visa section, the passport may be returned unprocessed with the fee refunded.

Visa-free entry — Not available for ordinary passports: Indian citizens require a visa; only holders of Indian diplomatic passports are exempt (bilateral agreement).

- Schengen INR fee differs between embassy (INR 9,900, page dated 01.10.2026) and VFS one-pager (INR 9100) - embassy figure is newer
- Application centre list compiled from mentions on VFS city pages; full official VAC list (visa.vfsglobal.com/ind/en/deu/attend-centre) could not be fetched
- make-it-in-germany.com (official federal portal) returned a bot-verification page, so Opportunity Card points table and the general Blue Card page were not read; Blue Card thresholds and Opportunity Card funds are taken from German Missions in India checklists
- No fixed national (D) visa processing time is published by German Missions in India (only 'may take several months'); appointment waiting times not quantified
- No official refusal statistics for German national (student/work) visas for Indian applicants found; EU statistics cover Schengen visas only
