Begin your journey in Manang, a beautiful and relatively large village situated at an altitude of around 3,540 meters. Manang serves as a perfect stop for acclimatization before tackling the higher altitudes. The village is known for its scenic beauty, Tibetan-style culture, and the surrounding mountain vistas.

From Manang, explore nearby areas such as Gangapurna Lake and Bhraka Village, and even visit the Buddhist monasteries that dot the region. The trek to Tilicho Lake is a challenging side trip from Manang but is one of the most rewarding parts of the circuit. Tilicho Lake is considered one of the highest lakes in the world, nestled in the northern part of the Annapurna massif.

Reaching the lake offers incredible views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks like Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, and Gangapurna. After Tilicho Lake, return to Manang to rest and prepare for the crossing of Thorong La Pass. It’s crucial to properly acclimatize to avoid altitude sickness, and many trekkers spend an extra day or two in Manang before heading to higher altitudes.

The trek from Manang to Thorong Phedi, the base camp for the pass, takes you through alpine meadows and offers amazing views of the surrounding peaks. Thorong La Pass is the highest point on the trek, standing at 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). It is one of the highest trekking passes in the world and presents both physical and mental challenges due to the high altitude, cold temperatures, and the long ascent.

The summit offers spectacular panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Crossing the pass is often considered the most physically demanding and rewarding part of the trek. After crossing Thorong La, the trail descends steeply to Muktinath, a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktinath is famous for its temple complex, hot springs, and the eternal flame that burns in the presence of natural gas.

The descent offers a dramatic change in landscape, from high-altitude deserts to greener, lower-altitude areas. Muktinath serves as a spiritual and cultural highlight of the trek. From Muktinath, head toward Jomsom, a larger town located along the Kali Gandaki River. The area around Jomsom is dry and desert-like, often compared to the Tibetan plateau.

The final part of the trek passes through Kagbeni, a picturesque village famous for its ancient monasteries and its location near the Kali Gandaki River.
