## TL;DR

Belgian visa files from India are decided by either the Embassy of Belgium in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai, depending on your state. New Delhi covers the north, east and North-East plus Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep; Mumbai covers the west and south plus Odisha. You lodge the application at one of 14 VFS Global centres.

## Key takeaways

- Two Belgian posts decide visas in India: the Embassy in New Delhi and the Consulate General in Mumbai.
- Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry fall under Mumbai.
- West Bengal, the North-Eastern states, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep fall under New Delhi.
- The Chennai consulate has closed and its states moved to Mumbai.
- Fees are the same whichever post decides: EUR 90 / INR 10170 for a short-stay visa from 1 October 2026.

**According to the Embassy of Belgium in India, two posts split the country: the Embassy in New Delhi covers northern and eastern India, including Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the North-East, while the Consulate General in Mumbai covers western and southern India plus Odisha, including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Telangana.**

The jurisdiction lists come from the 'Who's who and jurisdiction' pages of the Embassy and the Consulate General, as published on the official sources, checked on 2026-10-15. For fees, documents and every Belgian visa type, see our Belgium visa guide for Indians.

### Which pairings catch applicants out?
With only two posts, a few states land somewhere you might not expect:

- Odisha goes to Mumbai, while its neighbours West Bengal and Jharkhand go to New Delhi.
- All of South India goes to Mumbai: Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
- West Bengal and all eight North-Eastern states go to New Delhi.
- Both island territories, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep, sit with New Delhi, while Puducherry sits with Mumbai.
- Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh go to Mumbai, not New Delhi.

### What happened to the Belgian consulate in Chennai?
The Consulate General of Belgium in Chennai has closed, and its states moved to the Consulate General in Mumbai. The closure date is not shown on the Embassy page we checked. If you are in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Kochi and find an old reference to a Chennai consulate, ignore it: Mumbai now decides your file.

### Where do you actually submit your application?
Neither post accepts ordinary visa applications at its counter. You fill the form on VisaOnWeb, print it and lodge it in person at a VFS Global centre, where your live photo and fingerprints are taken (children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints for C visas). VFS lists 14 Belgium centres with these opening hours (Monday to Friday):

- Ahmedabad 09:00-17:00; Bengaluru 08:00-16:00; Chandigarh 08:00-17:00; Chennai 08:00-17:00.
- Cochin 08:00-17:00; Goa 08:00-15:00; Hyderabad 08:00-17:00; Jalandhar 09:00-16:00.
- Kolkata 09:00-14:00; Lucknow 09:00-14:00; Mumbai 08:00-17:00; New Delhi 08:00-16:00 (except holidays).
- Puducherry 08:00-15:00; Pune 08:00-17:00.
VFS says new appointment slots for the East and North Zone are released every 1st Monday of the month for the following month. The service fee shown on VFS's Belgium centre pages is INR 2825 per application (the Embassy page lists INR 2750), and fee-exempt applicants still pay it.

### Can you apply at the Embassy or Consulate directly?
Only three groups may apply directly at the Embassy or Consulate General: official passport holders, family members of EU citizens, and VIPs with an Embassy appointment. Everyone else goes through VFS.

For questions, the New Delhi Embassy answers visa queries only by email. The Mumbai Consulate General also takes visa calls between 14:00 and 15:00 on working days. If your file is referred to the Immigration Office in Belgium, ask the Embassy for the file number and follow the case on the Immigration Office website (dofi.ibz.be), which then becomes the only authority to contact.

### Does the deciding office change the fee, timeline or outcome?
Fees and timelines are the same at both posts:

- Short-stay (C) visa: EUR 90 / INR 10170 for adults and EUR 45 / INR 5085 for children aged 6-12, under the Embassy tariff effective 1 October 2026; children under 6 are exempt.
- Long-stay (D) visa: EUR 250 / INR 28250.
- Decision time: as a general rule within 15 working days of submission, extendable to 30 calendar days and exceptionally 60 calendar days if the file is referred to the Immigration Office in Belgium.
For long-stay student visas, jurisdiction also matters before you apply. An India-based sponsor, who must be a family member up to the third degree, signs an Annex 32 affidavit of support that has to be legalised by the Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulate General in Mumbai. The Immigration Office in Belgium then decides, within 90 days of the receipt (Annex 33ter) that the post issues once the file is complete.

European Commission statistics combine both posts. The refusal rate for short-stay Schengen applications lodged at Belgian consulates in India was 7.8% in 2025 (2,581 visas not issued; 33,333 applications lodged), down from 8.8% in 2024 (2,557 visas not issued; 29,322 applications lodged). Our record holds no separate figure for each post, and the rate describes past outcomes, not your chances.

### Jurisdiction mistakes to avoid
- Phoning the New Delhi Embassy about a visa; it answers visa questions only by email.
- Writing to the wrong post. Use the email of the post that covers your state from the table above.
- Assuming South India still has its own Belgian consulate. The Chennai consulate's states are now handled by Mumbai.
- Paying the old INR fee shown on the VFS one-pager. The Embassy tariff from 1 October 2026 is INR 10170 for an adult short-stay visa.
Yatra For Fun's India office in Gurugram prepares flight reservations, hotel bookings, travel itineraries and cover letters for visa files, with packages from INR 1,000 (flight reservation) to INR 3,000 (reservation, hotel, itinerary and cover letter).
