## TL;DR

US visa guidance for India requires H-1B, H-4, F, M and J applicants, plus A-3, C-3, G-5, H-3, I, K, Q, R, S, T, TN, TD and U applicants, to set all social media accounts to public. B-1/B-2 visitors and L-1 applicants are not on the list. Change the settings before your interview and keep your DS-160 answers consistent.

## Key takeaways

- B-1/B-2 visitor, L-1, O and P applicants are not on the published list.
- F and M students also pay the $350 SEVIS fee; J exchange visitors pay $220.

## Article

For most Indian applicants, the rule matters in two cases: a job move on an H-1B (with a spouse and children on H-4), or study in the US on an F-1, M-1 or J-1. This post explains who is covered, what else those applicants must prepare, and how the process works in India. It sticks to what the official pages say, as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026.

### Which US visa categories require public social media accounts?
The instruction is to adjust privacy settings on all social media accounts to "public". These are the categories Indian applicants most often use:

CategoryWho uses itVisa feeH-1BSpecialty occupation workers$205H-4Dependants of H visa holders$205 (H fee group)H-3Trainees$205 (H fee group)FAcademic students$185, plus $350 SEVIS feeMVocational students$185, plus $350 SEVIS feeJExchange visitors$185, plus $220 SEVIS feeIJournalists and media$185KFiancé(e) or spouse of a US citizen$265QInternational cultural exchange$205RReligious workers$205The full list also names A-3, C-3, G-5, S, T, TN, TD and U. Fees are paid in rupees at the consular exchange rate, which the U.S. Embassy set at INR 98 per USD from 25 May 2026.

### Are B1/B2 visitor and L-1 applicants covered?
Not by this list. B-1/B-2 tourist and business visas, L-1 intracompany transfers, O (extraordinary ability) and P (athletes, artists and entertainers) do not appear in the published categories.

That does not make a B-1/B-2 interview lighter. Under section 214(b), every B applicant is presumed to be an intending immigrant and must show a temporary purpose, a specific and limited stay, funds to cover expenses, and a residence outside the US with ties that ensure return.

### What does the rule mean for H-1B workers and H-4 families?
It applies to the whole family. The H-1B principal and each H-4 dependant are in listed categories, so everyone's accounts should be public before the interview.

The social media step sits alongside the usual H-1B paperwork:

- the receipt number of the approved USCIS Form I-129 petition (I-797 approval notice)
- the DS-160 confirmation page and a passport valid at least six months beyond the intended stay
- one 2 x 2-inch (51 x 51 mm) photo taken within the last six months, and the interview appointment letter
- for H-4 dependants: original marriage or birth certificates and a letter from the principal's employer confirming continued employment
- for H-4 dependants of an H-1B holder already working in the US: the holder's pay slips for the current calendar year and US federal tax returns (Form 1040 and W-2s) for each year on H-1B
Timing is fixed by the petition. The Embassy or Consulate may process the visa up to 90 days before the I-797 start date, and the visa can be used to enter from 10 days before that date. Separately, H-1B petitions for workers outside the US must carry a $100,000 employer payment under Proclamation 10973, renewed by Proclamation 11069 from 21 September 2026, unless DHS grants a national-interest exception.

### What do F-1, M-1 and J-1 students need to do?
Students are explicitly covered: the student visa page lists public social media accounts as a requirement for F, M and J applicants. Along with that, you need:

- an original signed Form I-20 from your US school
- the Form I-901 SEVIS fee receipt ($350 for F and M; $220 for most J categories)
- the DS-160 confirmation, a passport valid six months beyond your stay, a 2 x 2-inch photo and the appointment letter
- evidence of a residence in India you do not intend to abandon; failing the F requirements leads to refusal under INA 214(b)
A student visa can be issued up to 365 days before the course start date, but you can travel only within 30 days of the start date on your I-20.

One 2026 change affects your stay, not the interview. From 15 September 2026, F and J admission moved from "duration of status" to a fixed period up to the programme length, not exceeding four years, with extensions requested from USCIS. The F-1 departure period after completing studies fell from 60 days to 30.

### When should you change your settings, and for how long?
Change them before your interview, not on the day. The DS-160 asks about your social media presence, so the accounts you declare should match the accounts an officer can see.

Keep them public until your visa is issued. After the interview, nonimmigrant visas typically take 7-10 working days. Some cases go into administrative processing, which cannot be predicted in advance; most is resolved within 180 days of the interview.

### Where do you apply and pay in India?
You can apply at any of the five US posts if you are legally present in India: the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi or the Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. You attend a biometrics appointment at a Visa Application Center at least 2 business days before the interview.

Fee payment affects how quickly you can book. After a UPI or QR payment you can book instantly; after NEFT or a RuPay card, within one business day; after cash at AXIS or DRUK Bank, from the following business day. The fee receipt is valid for 365 days for scheduling.
