## TL;DR

Bulgaria requires travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000 covering the whole planned stay, including repatriation for medical reasons, emergency care and hospital treatment. Multiple-entry applicants insure the first trip and sign a statement for later ones, family members of EU/EEA/Swiss citizens are exempt, and long-stay (D) applicants need medical insurance for their initial entry.

## Key takeaways

- Minimum cover is EUR 30,000 for the entire planned stay.
- The policy must cover repatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and hospital treatment, including in case of death in Bulgaria.
- Multiple-entry applicants prove insurance for the first visit and sign a prescribed statement for later stays.
- Family members of EU/EEA/Swiss citizens are exempt from the insurance requirement.
- Long-stay (D) applicants need medical insurance for the period of initial entry into Bulgaria.

**According to the Embassy of Bulgaria and VFS Global, Indians applying for a Bulgaria Schengen visa need travel medical insurance with minimum cover of EUR 30,000 for the entire planned stay, covering medical repatriation, emergency medical care and hospital treatment, or death in Bulgaria. Multiple-entry applicants insure the first visit and sign a statement for later trips.**

### What exactly must the policy cover?
Bulgaria's rule has four parts. Check each one against your policy schedule before you print it.

RequirementWhat Bulgaria asks forTypeValid travel medical insuranceMinimum coverEUR 30,000Risks coveredRepatriation for medical reasons, emergency medical care and/or hospital treatment, in case of emergency or death in BulgariaPeriodThe entire period of the planned stayA basic policy that covers only baggage or flight delay does not meet this. Look for the words 'medical expenses', 'hospitalisation' and 'medical repatriation' in the schedule, and make sure the sum insured is at least EUR 30,000 or its equivalent.

The insurance sits in the common checklist that every short-stay applicant follows, alongside the application form, passport, photo, cover letter, return ticket or confirmed booking, and proof of funds of at least EUR 50 per day (no less than EUR 500 in total).

### How long must the policy run on single and multiple-entry visas?
For a single trip, the policy should run from the day you enter to the day you leave, matching your return ticket or confirmed booking.

Multiple-entry visas work differently. Bulgaria asks multiple-entry applicants to prove insurance for the first visit only and to sign a statement, on a prescribed form, covering subsequent stays. MFA Bulgaria repeats this in its multiple-entry rules: travel insurance needs to cover only the first intended visit.

This matters for frequent travellers. Under the EU's rule for Indian nationals living in India (Commission Implementing Decision C(2024) 2434), applicants who have obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years are issued a two-year multiple-entry visa. You do not need a two-year policy for that; you insure the first trip and sign the statement. On each later trip, you are still limited to 90 days in any 180-day period.

### Should the policy cover other Schengen countries too?
Bulgaria has issued uniform Schengen visas since 31 March 2024, and checks at its internal land borders were lifted on 1 January 2025. A Bulgarian visa can therefore take you to other Schengen states on the same trip.

Bulgaria's checklist states the cover amount and risks rather than a list of countries. If your itinerary includes Romania or any other Schengen state, choose a policy whose territorial scope covers every country on your route for those dates, so there is no gap in cover while you travel.

### Who does not need travel insurance for a Bulgaria visa?
Family members of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens are exempt from the insurance requirement. The same group, together with members of Bulgarian citizens' families, also pays no visa fee.

Children are not exempt from insurance. Children aged 12 and below pay no visa fee, but the insurance rule applies to each traveller in the family.

### What insurance do long-stay (D) applicants need?
Long-stay visas use a different wording: medical insurance for the period of initial entry into Bulgaria. It appears in every D-visa checklist VFS India publishes:

- Work (labour market access): application, passport, the Migration Directorate's notification with a positive opinion, paid fee and medical insurance for initial entry.
- Family reunification: application, passport, the positive decision notification, medical insurance for initial entry and paid fee.
- University studies: confirmation letters from the Ministry of Education and Science and the university, accommodation proof, medical insurance for initial entry, financial proof and a criminal record certificate.
A D visa (Art. 15(1)) is valid up to 6 months with a stay of up to 180 days. Workers then apply for a residence permit after arrival. At the visa stage, the D checklists ask only for cover for that initial entry period.

The European Commission's refusal rate for Schengen applications lodged at Bulgarian consulates in India was 37.9% in 2025: 1,270 visas not issued; 3,435 applications lodged. That figure describes past decisions, not your chances, but it is a reason to get every document right.

### Insurance mistakes to avoid
- A sum insured below EUR 30,000.
- A policy that omits medical repatriation or hospital treatment.
- Policy dates that start after your arrival or end before your return booking.
- Forgetting the signed statement for later trips on a multiple-entry application.
- Leaving other Schengen countries on your route out of the policy's territory.
