## TL;DR

A refused Swiss visa comes with a standard form issued by the Embassy on behalf of SEM. You or your Swiss host can object within 30 days in German, French or Italian, paying CHF 200 per person or family in advance; SEM takes about 8-12 weeks, and a further appeal goes to the Federal Administrative Court.

## Key takeaways

- Reasons for a Swiss refusal are given on a standard form issued by the Embassy on behalf of SEM.
- The written objection must be filed within 30 days of notification, signed and dated, in German, French or Italian.
- SEM charges an advance administrative fee of CHF 200 (INR 23,400) per person or family, refunded if it decides positively.
- SEM takes approximately 8-12 weeks; a further appeal to the Federal Administrative Court needs a representative in Switzerland.
- The original visa fee of INR 9,600 is not refunded when a visa is refused.

**According to the Embassy of Switzerland in India, a refused Schengen applicant gets a standard refusal form issued on behalf of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). You can appeal within 30 days with a signed letter in German, French or Italian, paying an advance fee of CHF 200 per person or family, refunded if SEM decides in your favour.**

## Article

The procedure below is as published on the official sources, checked on 2026-10-15. It explains the paperwork and the costs. It is not legal advice, and it cannot tell you whether a particular objection will succeed.

### What does the Swiss refusal letter tell you?
The Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi processes every visa application made in India, whichever VFS centre you used. When it refuses, it notifies the reasons on a standard refusal form issued on behalf of SEM, the Swiss federal migration authority. That detail matters: your objection is addressed to SEM, not to VFS and not to the visa officer.

Three things to note from the form straight away:

- The date you received it. The 30-day objection period runs from notification.
- The reason or reasons given. An objection has to answer these, point by point.
- Which representation refused. You can send your objection there or directly to SEM.
The visa fee you paid (EUR 90 / INR 9,600 for an adult) is due on submission and is not refunded when an application is refused or withdrawn.

### Who can file the objection, and in what language?
The applicant can file it. So can an authorised representative, and the Embassy's sheet names the host or inviting company in Switzerland as the typical representative. For a family visit or a business trip, the person or company that invited you is often better placed to explain the purpose of the trip.

The letter must be signed and dated and written in German, French or Italian. English is not among the listed languages. Address it to SEM and send it either to the Swiss representation that refused the visa or to SEM, Quellenweg 6, CH-3003 Berne-Wabern. The Embassy's statutory rights sheet on written objections sets out these requirements.

### How do you file a written objection?
- Write down the date you were notified and count 30 days forward. That is your deadline.
- List each refusal reason from the form and gather evidence that responds to it, for example salary slips, ITR-V, bank statements or the host's invitation.
- Draft the letter in German, French or Italian, addressed to SEM, then sign and date it. If your host files it, include your authorisation.
- Pay the advance administrative fee of CHF 200 per person or family.
- Send the objection to the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi or to SEM in Berne-Wabern.
- Allow approximately 8-12 weeks for SEM's decision.

Because the SEM fee is charged per person or per family, one advance can cover a family that was refused together.

### What happens if SEM confirms the refusal?
You get one more level. A further appeal can go to the Federal Administrative Court within 30 days. It can be lodged only by an authorised representative in Switzerland, such as a Swiss lawyer, or by the host or company. You cannot lodge it yourself from India.

### Should you object or apply again?
Neither route comes with a promised outcome. A few practical points help you choose:

- Timing: an objection takes about 8-12 weeks. If your travel date is close, it will not rescue that trip.
- What was wrong: if the form points to something your file genuinely lacked, such as last 3 months' salary slips, ITR-V for 2 assessment years, or insurance from an approved Indian insurer with at least EUR 30,000 cover, a corrected new file may address it directly.
- What was misread: if the evidence was already in the file and the reason does not fit it, an objection lets you say so formally.
- Practicalities of a new file: it must reach VFS at least 15 calendar days before travel, and you appear in person for fingerprints unless they were collected within the last 59 months for a visa marked VIS. The Embassy may also call you for a personal interview.
Whichever you choose, do not hide the earlier refusal, and keep the refusal form with your records.

### How common are refusals at Swiss consulates in India?
European Commission data put the refusal rate for short-stay Schengen applications lodged at Swiss consulates in India at 13.6% in 2025: 30,630 visas not issued; 226,044 applications lodged. In 2024 the rate was 12.0%: 26,126 visas not issued; 217,373 applications lodged. These figures describe all applicants together. They are not a forecast for any individual file.
