## TL;DR

INZ decides 80% of Accredited Employer Work Visa applications within 5.5 weeks, and Green List roles are prioritised automatically. The figure is a headline for all applicants, not an India-specific time. Medicals, police certificates, qualification assessments and the employer's job check all happen before the clock starts.

## Key takeaways

- AEWV: 80% of applications decided within 5.5 weeks (INZ headline timeframe for all applicants).
- Green List roles are prioritised without an escalation request.
- Partner of a Worker Work Visa: 80% within 6 weeks; Post-Study Work Visa: 80% within 5.5 weeks.
- Escalation is only for compelling reasons and affects when a file is allocated, not the decision.
- Your passport goes to VFS only if INZ asks, with an INR 1,460 handling fee.

**Immigration New Zealand (INZ) decides 80% of Accredited Employer Work Visa applications within 5.5 weeks, according to the headline timeframe on its AEWV page. Applications for Green List roles are prioritised without an escalation request. The figure covers all applicants, including Indians, and you can apply only after your employer's job check is approved.**

## Article

INZ shows a headline timeframe on each visa page. Its country-specific timeframes, available through an office finder that needs your details, are a separate tool not covered here. The INZ website was returning errors on 15 and 16 October 2026, so the figures below come from archived captures of INZ's own pages dated 4 October 2026 and earlier; re-check them on the live site before you plan travel. Otherwise, facts are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For visitor visas, see our New Zealand visa guide for Indians.

### What does "80% within 5.5 weeks" actually mean?
It means 80% of AEWV applications are decided within 5.5 weeks of being lodged. The rest take longer. The headline figure is not a maximum, and INZ usually allocates applications in the order received.

So 5.5 weeks is a planning figure, not a deadline. If your file needs extra checks, such as verifying overseas work experience or waiting for a medical certificate, it can fall outside that 80%. Applications for jobs on the Green List are the exception that moves faster: INZ prioritises them without you having to ask.

### What happens before the processing clock even starts?
The 5.5-week figure measures only INZ's decision on your application. Several steps come first, and INZ publishes no timeframe for most of them.

- Employer accreditation and job check. The employer must be AEWV-accredited and have an approved job check before it can send you the link to apply.
- Qualification assessment. If your overseas qualification is below a bachelor's degree, you need an International Qualification Assessment from NZQA.
- Work-experience evidence. INZ wants third-party documents such as employment certificates, payslips or tax certificates; a CV alone is not enough.
- English. Jobs at ANZSCO/NOL skill level 3 to 5 need English evidence. From 1 June 2026 the minimum (IELTS 4.0 or equivalent) extends to skill level 3 roles; a test result must be no more than 2 years old.
- Medical and police checks. A chest X-ray is needed if you will stay more than 6 months, because India is not a low-TB country, and medical documents must be less than 3 months old. Police certificates apply if you are 17 or older and will spend 24 months or longer in New Zealand.
Request police certificates early, and time the chest X-ray so it is less than 3 months old when you apply. That avoids a gap between your job offer and a decision-ready application.

### Can you speed up an AEWV from India?
Only in narrow cases. INZ considers an escalation request only for a compelling or very important reason: compelling personal or business circumstances, humanitarian factors or the national interest. Even then, escalation affects only when your application is allocated to an officer, not how it is assessed.

Paying someone does not help. Employers or agents cannot charge you for a job or recruitment costs, INZ declines applications where money was offered for a job offer, and it warns that job offer scams are common in India and South Asia. A Green List role is the one built-in priority INZ names.

### What happens between approval and your flight?
- Passport: the AEWV is applied for online, and your passport goes to a VFS centre in New Delhi, Chandigarh or Mumbai only if INZ asks. The handling fee is INR 1,460, including courier.
- Courier rules: since 18 August 2026 VFS returns passports by courier with a maximum of two passports per bag, and pre-paid self-addressed envelopes are not accepted.
- On arrival: complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (by air, from 24 hours before your journey begins). AEWV holders may need to show evidence of their job offer at the border.

### What if your AEWV is declined?
From India, you make a new application. INZ's reconsideration process (NZD 220, 80% within 5 weeks) is only available if you applied while in New Zealand and are still there on a valid visa. You cannot ask for a second reconsideration either way.

INZ publishes no visitor or work visa approval or decline rates for Indian applicants; its nationality data covers offshore student visas only. A decline therefore says nothing about national trends, only about your file, so fix what was weak or missing before you reapply.
