### Do you still go to VFS after the 1 October online switch?
Only if INZ asks for your passport, or if you are making a paper application under a route that still allows one. From 1 October 2026, applications for selected visitor and transit visas must be submitted through Immigration Online, according to the VFS Global notice on upcoming changes. INZ emails the decision.

VFS Global remains INZ's official partner in India, with Visa Application Centres in New Delhi, Chandigarh and Mumbai. Appointments are required. Two charges apply at VFS:

- Passport handling for an online application: INR 1,460.00 (USD 24.00).
- Paper application: INR 2,085.00 (USD 34.00).
Both include courier to the lodging country and are non-refundable. Since 18 August 2026, VFS returns passports by courier with a maximum of two passports per courier bag, and pre-paid self-addressed envelopes are not accepted. A family of four should expect at least two courier bags.

One practical side effect: INZ's own checklist for India (INZ 11223, July 2024) still mentions the paper form INZ 1017 and two photographs. Online applications need one acceptable photo, so follow the online form, not the old PDF.

### What does the NZ-India Free Trade Agreement mean for Indian workers?
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on 27 April 2026 and enters into force on 20 October 2026, according to the MFAT summary of key outcomes. New Zealand's commitments include:

- The equivalent of 1,667 three-year temporary employment entry visas a year, with no more than 5,000 held at any time.
- 1,467 of those for 13 skilled Green List occupations.
- 200 for iconic Indian occupations, such as yoga instructors, musicians, chefs and ayurvedic practitioners.
- A working holiday scheme of up to 1,000 places a year.
Separate regulations exempt the two new visas, the India Iconic Work visa and the India Skilled Work visa, from the NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy from 20 October 2026.

What is not yet known matters as much. INZ had not published the opening dates or criteria for these visas, or for the working holiday scheme, in the pages checked. Until it does, an Indian citizen cannot apply for a New Zealand working holiday visa, because India is not on INZ's list of working holiday countries. Treat any agent offering "FTA visa slots" today with suspicion.

### Who is affected by the new AEWV English rule?
From 1 June 2026, the minimum English requirement for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (IELTS 4.0 or equivalent) applies to ANZSCO/NOL skill level 3 roles as well as skill level 4 and 5 roles. It covers:

- New AEWV applications made on or after 1 June 2026 for skill level 3 jobs.
- Current AEWV holders whose visa expires after 1 December 2026 and who apply for a further skill level 3 AEWV.
English evidence that INZ has already accepted still counts. Job Change, Global Workforce Seasonal and Peak Seasonal AEWV applications are not covered. Skill level 1 and 2 jobs remain exempt. Source: the New Zealand Government announcement.

### Which Indian graduates gain from the 16 November change?
INZ's Post-Study Work Visa page states that from 16 November 2026 the visa extends to applicants with an NZQCF level 7 graduate diploma, studied full-time in New Zealand, who also hold a bachelor's degree from New Zealand or overseas. An Indian bachelor's degree counts as the overseas degree. The PSWV costs NZD 1,670 from outside New Zealand and INZ's headline timeframe is 80% within 5.5 weeks. Read the detail on the INZ Post-Study Work Visa page.

### What has stayed the same?
- No visa-free entry or visa on arrival: India is not on New Zealand's visa-waiver list.
- Visitor Visa fee: NZD 441 when applying from India, including the NZD 100 visitor levy, and not refunded if declined.
- Processing: INZ's figure for Indian Visitor Visa applications is 80% within 2 weeks. INZ says September to March is its busiest period.
- Length of stay: up to 9 months in an 18-month period.
- Funds: at least NZD 1,000 a month, or NZD 400 a month if accommodation is prepaid.
On the numbers side, INZ's offshore student visa data shows 39% of decided applications from Indian nationals were declined in 2025, down from 50% in 2024. That measures student visa decisions only, not visitor or work visas.
