The student route itself changed this year. Since 1 October 2026, Indians apply directly for a long-stay visa D at the Luxembourg Visa Application Centre run by VFS Global, instead of first applying to the Directorate General for Immigration for a temporary authorisation to stay. Applications filed on or before 30 September 2026 still follow the old procedure. All amounts here are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For every other category, see our Luxembourg visa guide for Indians.

### How much is the Luxembourg student visa fee in rupees?
The Embassy of Luxembourg in New Delhi charges one long-stay visa fee for all applicants: EUR 50. Its long-term national visa page shows this as INR 5500. The same fee covers student, salaried-worker, EU Blue Card and family long-stay visas, so the purpose of your stay does not change the amount.

### Why do the Embassy and VFS show different rupee amounts?
Both figures start from the same EUR 50. VFS says its rupee amounts follow the current exchange rate and are subject to change at every month end, which is why its INR 5185 differs from the Embassy's INR 5500. The Embassy figure is the more recent of the two, published in October 2026.

The VFS service charge has the same problem. One passage of the VFS one-pager states INR 2281 inclusive of GST, while another passage on the same page states INR 1605. Plan for the higher amounts and check the VFS Luxembourg page in the week you submit.

Do not confuse the student fee with the short-stay Schengen fee. VFS lists INR 9330 for short-term visas (the Embassy states EUR 90, or 9900 INR). That fee is for tourist, business and family visits of up to 90 days, not for a degree programme.

### What does VFS Global charge on top of the visa fee?
Every application carries the VFS service charge. Beyond that, the cost depends on where you submit and which extras you choose.

- Transfer to New Delhi: the Embassy of Luxembourg in New Delhi is competent for all applications from India. Applicants at centres other than New Delhi pay an additional courier charge for sending the file to New Delhi and back.
- Doorstep service: VFS lists its visa-at-your-doorstep option at INR 9900 per person, or INR 7500 per person for groups of 2 to 10.
- Optional add-ons: courier return, SMS alerts, Premium Lounge and Prime Time slots are all optional. They are conveniences at the centre and do not change the official decision period.

### Which other costs belong in your student budget?
The visa fee is the smallest part of the file. Guichet.lu's student page lists requirements that carry their own costs:

- Proof of resources: at least 80% of the social inclusion income (REVIS) in force. The student page does not print a euro figure, so look up the current REVIS amount on Guichet.lu rather than relying on an agent's estimate.
- Travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen states for the whole visa period, covering medical, hospital, repatriation and death costs.
- Criminal record extract from your country of residence, less than 3 months old, for adult applicants.
- Sworn translations of any document not in French, German or English.
- An ICAO photo less than 3 months old.
Once in Luxembourg you also apply for the student residence permit before the visa expires. Its fee is not stated on the pages we checked, so confirm it on Guichet.lu before you travel.

### How long will you wait after paying?
For student applications made from 1 October 2026, Guichet.lu says the decision period is in principle 60 days at most. The period is suspended while missing information or documents requested by the minister are awaited. If there is no reply within 3 months, the application can be considered rejected. Long-term applicants may also be asked to attend a personal interview at the Embassy.

Files lodged under the old procedure (by 30 September 2026) were generally processed in 15 days, or up to 45 days when documents were missing.

### How do you avoid paying the fee twice?
- Pick the right category. Book a long-term visa appointment, not a short-term one.
- Submit a complete file. Every missing document stops the 60-day clock and can push you past your course start.
- Watch document ages. The criminal record extract and the photo must each be less than 3 months old when you apply.
- Check your passport. It must be valid at least 6 months beyond the stay and issued within the last 10 years.
- Choose an open centre. The Embassy lists the Gurgaon, Pondicherry and Trivandrum centres as currently closed, so applicants from Gurugram should plan to submit at another centre such as Delhi.
