## TL;DR

The landing criteria for Japan's Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status contain no age requirement; they test education, experience and pay. The J-Find job-search visa requires applicants to be 18 or older, but its real limit is a degree from an eligible university awarded within the last 5 years.

## Key takeaways

- The Engineer/Specialist landing criteria set education, experience and pay conditions and contain no age requirement.
- J-Find requires age 18 or older, plus a degree from an eligible university awarded within the last 5 years.
- Without a related degree, 10 years' practical experience can meet the Engineer/Specialist education test.
- Pay must be at least equal to what a Japanese national earns for the same work.
- The visa costs Indians INR 500 plus the INR 800 VFS service charge, after the employer obtains a Certificate of Eligibility.

**Japan sets no age limit for its Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services work status. According to the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the landing criteria test education, experience and pay, and contain no age requirement. The only published age rule among the work routes covered here is the J-Find job-search visa, which requires applicants aged 18 or older.**

That is good news for mid-career Indian engineers, IT professionals and specialists who worry they are 'too old' for Japan. The tests that do apply are stricter on paperwork than on birth year. The rules below are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For the full list of Japanese visas and offices, see our Japan visa guide for Indians.

### Is there an upper age limit for a Japanese work visa?
Not for the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status, which covers engineering, IT and jobs based on foreign culture such as translation, interpretation, language teaching, PR, overseas trade, design and product development. Its landing criteria contain no age requirement.

MOFA's working visa also covers other statuses: Professor, Artist, Religious activities, Journalist, Business manager, Legal/Accounting services, Medical services, Researcher, Instructor and Nursing care. The official summaries checked for this page do not set out age rules for those statuses either way, so if your job falls under one of them, read the MOFA working visa page for that status before you rely on it.

### Which Japanese visa does have an age rule?
The J-Find visa (Designated Activities: Future Creation Individual), which lets recent graduates job-hunt or prepare a business in Japan for up to 2 years. Applicants must be aged 18 or older. In practice, the age rule is not what stops most Indians:

- The degree (bachelor's, master's or PhD) must come from a university on the Immigration Services Agency's eligible list.
- The degree must have been awarded within the last 5 years.
- You need personal savings of approximately 200,000 yen.
- The eligible-university list as of January 2026 includes no university in India.

### If age is not tested, what does the Immigration Services Agency check?
Three things, set out in the landing criteria for the Engineer/Specialist status:

- Education or experience. A university degree, or equivalent education, in a subject related to the job; or a related course at a Japanese vocational school; or 10 years' practical experience. IT workers with a designated IT qualification are exempt from this condition.
- Experience for culture-based jobs. Translation, interpretation, language teaching, PR, overseas trade, design and product development need at least 3 years' related experience, except for university graduates doing translation, interpretation or language teaching.
- Pay. At least equal to what a Japanese national would receive for the same work.
A newer condition applies from 15 April 2026. Where the employer is in Category 3 or 4, the application must include a declaration about the employer's representative, and work that mainly uses language skills needs proof of CEFR B2-level ability in the working language. JLPT N2 or above counts for Japanese.

### Can a mid-career Indian without a related degree qualify?
Yes, through experience. The 10-year practical experience route exists precisely for people whose degree does not match their job or who have no degree. That route naturally suits older applicants, since a decade of experience takes time to build.

Your experience has to be documented. The VFS checklists for a long-term visa with a COE ask for:

- Delhi: experience certificate and educational certificate.
- Mumbai (November 2025): experience certificate, CV and a copy of the contract with the Japanese employer.
- Bengaluru: employment certificate or relieving/resignation letter, or a degree certificate if you recently completed studies.

### Does age matter later, for renewals or permanent residence?
The period of stay granted on a working visa is 5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months. Permanent residence is granted in Japan by the Immigration Services Agency under guidelines revised on 24 February 2026, and the listed conditions are about residence, conduct and compliance rather than age:

- In principle 10 years or more of continuous residence, including at least 5 years on a working status.
- Good conduct and enough assets or skills to support yourself.
- Taxes, public pension and health insurance premiums paid properly.
- Shorter routes for highly skilled professionals with 70 points (after 3 years) or 80 points (after 1 year).

### How do you apply from India, at any age?
Your Japanese employer, or another proxy in Japan, first applies for a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at a regional immigration office. The standard processing period is 1 to 3 months, and there is no fee for the COE. A COE does not guarantee the visa.

You then apply at a VFS Japan Visa Application Centre. Indians pay INR 500 for the visa (Embassy of Japan, from 1 July 2026) plus the INR 800 VFS service charge. Indicative processing is a minimum of 5 working days at the Embassy in New Delhi, 10 processing days in Mumbai (12 in Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa), a minimum of 3 working days in Chennai, 5 in Kolkata and 6 in Bengaluru.

### Frequently asked questions

#### Is there a maximum age for the J-Find visa?
No maximum is stated; applicants must be 18 or older. The binding conditions are a degree from an eligible university awarded within the last 5 years and savings of about 200,000 yen.
