## TL;DR

A Japanese employer sponsors an Indian hire by applying for a Certificate of Eligibility in Japan, which takes 1 to 3 months and has no fee. The worker then applies at a VFS Japan centre, paying INR 500 plus an INR 800 VFS charge, with indicative visa-stage times from a minimum of 3 working days in Chennai to 12 processing days at Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa.

## Key takeaways

- The employer, or another proxy in Japan, applies for the Certificate of Eligibility; standard processing is 1 to 3 months with no fee.
- A COE does not guarantee the visa; MOFA still examines the application made in India.
- Engineer/Specialist roles need a related degree, a related Japanese vocational course or 10 years' experience, and pay equal to a Japanese worker's.
- Visa fee for Indian nationals is INR 500 plus INR 800 VFS service charge.
- The January 2026 J-Find university list includes no Indian university, so graduates of Indian universities cannot use the job-hunting route.

**In Japan, visa sponsorship means the hiring company or another proxy in Japan applies for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) at a regional immigration office: 1 to 3 months, no fee. You then apply at a VFS Japan centre in India; the Embassy of Japan charges Indian nationals INR 500, plus INR 800 to VFS.**

## Article

This post explains how the sponsorship process works; it is not a job board. The rules come from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the Immigration Services Agency of Japan, the Embassy of Japan in India and VFS Global, as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For visitor visas, see our Japan visa guide for Indians.

### What does visa sponsorship mean for a job in Japan?
The employer's central task is the COE. Once you accept an offer, the company, or another proxy in Japan, applies for the certificate at a regional immigration office. The Immigration Services Agency gives a standard processing period of 1 to 3 months and charges no fee for it.

The COE confirms that your planned activity fits a Japanese status of residence. It is not the visa. MOFA states that a COE does not guarantee the visa will be issued, so the application you make in India is still examined on its own.

Applying without a COE is possible, but MOFA warns that it needs a large number of documents and can take several months. For a job offer, the COE route is the practical one.

### Which jobs can a Japanese employer sponsor?
MOFA's working visa covers these statuses:

- Professor, Researcher and Instructor
- Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services
- Business manager
- Legal/Accounting services and Medical services
- Journalist, Artist and Religious activities
- Nursing care
The Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services status takes in technical work such as IT and engineering, and jobs based on foreign culture: translation, interpretation, language teaching, PR, overseas trade, design and product development. A sponsored stay is granted for 5 years, 3 years, 1 year or 3 months.

### What must you and the job meet?
The Immigration Services Agency's landing criteria for Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services set the following conditions.

ConditionRuleEducationA university degree, or equivalent education, in a subject related to the job, or a related course at a Japanese vocational schoolExperience instead of a degree10 years' practical experienceIT exemptionIT workers holding a designated IT qualification are exempt from the education and experience conditionForeign-culture jobsAt least 3 years' related experience, except university graduates doing translation, interpretation or language teachingPayAt least equal to what a Japanese national would receive for the same workAgeNo age requirement in the criteriaCategory 3 or 4 employer (from 15 April 2026)Declaration about the employer's representative; for language-based work, proof of CEFR B2 in the working language (JLPT N2 or above counts for Japanese)The pay rule is worth checking before you sign. An offer below what a Japanese employee would earn for the same role does not meet the criteria.

### How does the hiring-to-visa timeline run?
- Offer and contract. You agree terms with the Japanese employer and receive a copy of the contract.
- COE application in Japan. The employer or proxy files it; allow 1 to 3 months.
- COE issued. An original, a copy or a printout of an electronic COE is accepted at VFS.
- Visa application in India. Submit at the VFS centre for your jurisdiction and pay INR 500 plus INR 800.
- Visa decision. Indicative times after the COE: Embassy in New Delhi minimum 5 working days; Mumbai 10 processing days (Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa 12); Chennai minimum 3 working days; Kolkata minimum 5; Bengaluru minimum 6.
- Travel. A single-entry visa is basically valid for three months, so enter Japan within that period.
From 19 October 2026, VFS Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa accept Japan applications only by prior appointment, so book as soon as the COE arrives if you live in that jurisdiction.

### Which documents does VFS ask for after the COE arrives?
JurisdictionWork-visa documents beyond the passport, form and photoDelhi (Embassy)COE (original, copy or e-COE printout), experience certificate, educational certificateMumbai (checklist CL-07, November 2025)Covering letter, original COE and one copy, experience certificate, CV, copy of the contract with the Japanese employerBengaluruCovering letter, COE original and a copy, employment certificate or relieving/resignation letter, or degree certificate if you recently finished studies; residence proof if your passport was issued outside KarnatakaYour passport needs more than two blank pages, and all photocopies must be on A4 paper. Documents submitted are not returned, apart from the passport.

### Can you go to Japan to job-hunt without a sponsor?
Only in narrow cases. The J-Find visa lets recent graduates of top-ranked universities look for work or prepare a business in Japan for up to 2 years. You need a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree awarded within the last 5 years by a university on the Immigration Services Agency's list, plus personal savings of approximately 200,000 yen.

The eligible-university list as of January 2026 includes no university in India. An Indian citizen who graduated from a listed university abroad may qualify; a graduate of an Indian university does not.

### Where can a sponsored job lead?
Family members can follow. The Bengaluru long-term checklist asks dependants for the COE, an invitation letter, the spouse's residence card and passport copy, and a marriage or birth certificate.

Permanent residence is granted in Japan, not applied for from India. The Immigration Services Agency's guidelines, revised on 24 February 2026, ask in principle for 10 years' continuous residence, including at least 5 years on a working status. Highly skilled professionals can qualify sooner: after 3 years with 70 points or 1 year with 80 points.

### Frequently asked questions

#### Do I need to speak Japanese to get a sponsored job in Japan?
The Engineer/Specialist landing criteria set education, experience and pay conditions rather than a general Japanese-language test. From 15 April 2026, work mainly using language skills at a Category 3 or 4 employer needs CEFR B2 in the working language, and JLPT N2 or above counts for Japanese.

#### Is there an age limit for a Japanese work visa?
No. The Immigration Services Agency's landing criteria for Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services contain no age requirement. They focus on education or experience, the job's content and equal pay.

#### Does the Indian worker pay for the Certificate of Eligibility?
The Immigration Services Agency charges no fee for a COE. The worker pays the INR 500 visa fee and the INR 800 VFS service charge when applying in India.
