### Which Japan visa centres need a booked appointment?
Each Japanese office decides applications only from residents of its jurisdiction, so your state decides your centre.

The VFS appointment page lists the Chennai consulate's area without Kerala, while the Consulate's own page includes Kerala. The Jalandhar centre is temporarily closed.

The Consulate-General in Mumbai stopped accepting visa applications directly on 20 April 2026. The Embassy in New Delhi accepts only diplomatic and official visas and humanitarian cases. For a student visa, VFS is the only route.

### What must you have before you book?
A Certificate of Eligibility (COE). A regional immigration authority in Japan issues it, and a proxy in Japan can apply on your behalf. Standard processing is 1 to 3 months, and the COE carries no fee.

Applying without a COE is possible, but MOFA warns that it needs a large amount of verification documents and can take several months. A COE also does not guarantee the visa. Booking a slot before the COE is in hand risks wasting it.

Work back from your course start date. The COE takes 1 to 3 months in Japan. The visa stage then takes from a minimum of 3 working days at Chennai to 12 processing days at Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa. Waiting time for a booked slot comes on top, and VFS does not publish it.

### How do you book on the VFS website?
Use the VFS Global Japan India Book an appointment page, which lists the appointment-only centres. Choose a centre inside the jurisdiction of the state where you live.

If your passport was issued in another state, carry proof of your current address. Bengaluru, for example, accepts a rental or lease agreement, sale deed, gas or electricity bill, or Aadhaar for passports issued outside Karnataka.
