## Article

Each category has its own checklist, and the office deciding your file depends on where you live: the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi or the Consulates-General in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Bengaluru. VFS plays no role in the decision. The details below are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For single-entry tourist visas, business visas and the rest, see our Japan visa guide for Indians.

### Which multiple-entry categories can Indians apply under?
The Delhi VFS page, which serves the Embassy's jurisdiction, lists seven categories for Indian nationals:

Delhi VFS categoryWho it is forMULTIPLE 1Indian nationals with travel records to Japan twice or more in the last three yearsMULTIPLE 2Indian nationals with a travel record to Japan in the last three yearsMULTIPLE 3Indian nationals with travel records to Japan and G7 countries in the last three yearsMULTIPLE 4Indian nationals with sufficient financial capacityMULTIPLE 5Short-term business visa for Indian nationalsMULTIPLE 6Intellectual figures (Indian nationals)MULTIPLE 7Spouse or children of an individual who has an employment visa in JapanThe Mumbai and Kolkata consulates group the tourist-type options under one heading, "Multiple Entry Visa up to 30 days (Temporary Stay) for Indian ordinary passport holder", covering applicants with a travel record to Japan in the last three years, applicants with sufficient financial capacity, the spouse or children of such applicants, and applicants with travel records to Japan and G7 countries. A separate multiple-entry category covers business purposes and cultural or intellectual figures.

### What does the Japan-and-G7 travel record route require?
This route rewards a clean travel history. The Delhi MULTIPLE 3 checklist asks for the common documents (passport with old passports, a copy of the bio-data page, the signed form and one photo), a covering letter if any explanation is needed, and copies of passport pages showing:

- A Japanese temporary visitor visa and entry stamp, and
- Temporary visitor visas and entry stamps to G7 countries, more than twice, in the last three years
The Mumbai Consulate's version (November 2025) asks for more supporting evidence: a covering letter stating why you want multiple entry, a reason or invitation letter showing that need, confirmed hotel and flight bookings, an original bank statement for the last three months, Income Tax Returns for 3 years, a leave sanction letter or NOC, proof of ownership for company owners and a student ID for students.

### What do financially sufficient applicants submit?
If you have not travelled to Japan before, the financial-capacity route is the one that does not depend on past Japanese visas.

- Delhi (MULTIPLE 4): a covering letter if needed and your latest Income Tax Return. A spouse or child applying separately adds kinship documents, the latest ITR of the spouse or parent, and a copy of that person's multiple-entry visa if they already hold one.
- Mumbai (checklist CL-11, November 2025): a covering letter stating the reason for multiple entry, a confirmed return travel booking for the first trip and a hotel booking, a machine-readable ICAO-standard passport, a bank statement for the last three months, Income Tax Returns for the last 3 years, a leave sanction letter, and proof of ownership if you own a company.
Neither checklist states a minimum income or bank balance. The assessment rests on the tax returns and statements you submit, so make sure they are recent, complete and consistent with your covering letter.

### How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
From 1 July 2026 the Embassy of Japan charges Indian nationals INR 500 for a single or a multiple visa. VFS adds a service fee of INR 800 per application, which is non-refundable. VFS says the visa fee is refunded only if the visa is not approved.

Applications are accepted from 3 months before the travel date. From 19 October 2026 all applications at the Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Goa centres need a prior appointment.

### Can you get a multiple-entry visa as an eVISA?
No. The eVISA available to Indians since 1 April 2024 is a single-entry tourism visa for stays of up to 90 days. You still submit that application at a VFS Japan centre, and the visa issuance notice must be shown on a mobile device with internet at the airport. The multiple-entry categories are separate VFS visa types with their own checklists, and the fully online JAPAN eVISA website is open only to residents of a short list of countries that does not include India.

### What if you receive a single-entry visa or a refusal?
- Single entry instead: the Delhi MULTIPLE 3 and MULTIPLE 4 checklists both note that the Embassy may issue a single-entry visa after assessment. Use it, build the travel record, and apply again later.
- Refusal: a new application for the same purpose is not accepted within six months of the refusal, except where circumstances have changed significantly and travel is needed on humanitarian grounds. The Foreign Ministry does not give the specific reason.
- Jurisdiction: apply to the office covering where you live. Bengaluru and Kolkata ask applicants whose passport was issued outside their states for residence proof.
- Photos: Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata ask for 45mm x 35mm, while Mumbai and Chennai state 2 x 2 inch, so follow your centre's checklist.
Mumbai's checklists ask for confirmed hotel and flight bookings, while Chennai's tourist checklist recommends a reservation rather than a confirmed ticket before the visa is granted. Yatra For Fun's India office in Gurugram prepares flight reservations, hotel bookings, day-wise itineraries and cover letters, from INR 1,000 for a reservation to INR 3,000 for the full set.
