Everything here is as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026: the Embassy of Italy New Delhi study checklist of June 2025, and the VFS Global India pages for Italy. Our Italy visa overview for Indians covers tourist and business travel.

### D visa or C visa: which Italian study visa do you need?
Italy issues two kinds of study visa, and the length of your course decides which one applies.

- National D study visa: for courses lasting more than 90 days, such as a Bachelor's or Master's degree. Fee EUR 50 / INR 5,350.
- Short-stay C study visa: for study of up to 90 days. The Embassy lists it as free, and VFS shows short-term study applicants as exempt from visa fees. The VFS service charge of INR 631 still applies.
There is one special case. If your admission depends on an entrance test at the Italian university, you apply for the D visa. If you are going to take a test before your final certificate is issued, you apply for a short-stay C study visa.

### What is the timeline, from Universitaly to arrival?
- Pre-enrol on Universitaly and get the enrolment confirmation or admission letter from the Italian university or institute.
- Get your certificates attested and apostilled. Study certificates need HRD attestation and an MEA apostille.
- Obtain the DoV or CIMEA certificate if your university requires one.
- Pay the full enrolment fees and keep the receipt.
- Book VFS for the centre under the mission covering your state. You can lodge an application up to six months before travel.
- Submit and give fingerprints. Italy has collected fingerprints for D visas since 11 January 2025. Mumbai-jurisdiction students then have a video-conference interview with a Consulate officer at the centre.
- Wait for the decision. VFS lists 90 working days for Study Long Stay (and 90 days for Study Short Stay).
- After arrival, apply for a permesso di soggiorno at the Questura within 8 working days.
Because the visa stage alone is listed at 90 working days, plan backwards from your course start date and leave room for the DoV and apostille steps before it.

### How much does it cost, and how much money must you show?

The funds rules matter more than the fee. Sponsors may only be your parents, Italian or foreign nationals legally resident in Italy, or recognised institutions. An education loan counts only if it is deposited and visible on your bank statements. An Italian government scholarship also counts.

### How do DoV, CIMEA and the MEA apostille work?
A Declaration of Value (DoV) is issued by an Italian mission and describes your Indian qualification. For a study DoV, the Embassy checklist asks for the request and data-privacy forms, a passport copy, your final degree or school certificate in original with HRD authentication and apostille plus 2 copies, transcripts and mark sheets treated the same way, information on your institution's grading system, and the Universitaly pre-enrolment summary with the acceptance letter. DoVs are issued free of charge for verified study reasons.

Some universities accept a CIMEA certificate instead. Applications without a DoV or CIMEA are not accepted unless the university explicitly says they are not required. Students whose final degree or diploma was issued in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana or Puducherry and who apply in the Mumbai jurisdiction must first get the DoV from the Consulate General in Bangalore.

### Who interviews you, and which office covers your state?
The Embassy of Italy in New Delhi covers Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh. The Consulate General in Mumbai covers Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, with VFS centres in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Kochi. Kolkata covers the East and North-East, and Bangalore covers Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Puducherry.

Mumbai-jurisdiction students book with their own email and phone number at the Mumbai or Cochin VFS centre and complete a video-conference interview with a Consulate officer right after submission. Any mission may also call an applicant for a personal interview or ask for more documents.

#### Mistakes that stop an Italian study file
SDM attestation instead of HRD plus MEA apostille, a missing enrolment-fee receipt, a loan sanction letter without the money in your account, and an agent's phone number on the form all cause trouble. The form must carry your own working phone number.

For the accommodation or flight reservation in your file, Yatra For Fun's India office in Gurugram prepares flight reservations, hotel bookings, itineraries and cover letters, priced from INR 1,000 for a flight reservation to INR 3,000 for all four together.
