## TL;DR

A Portugal Schengen visa is decided within 15 calendar days from admissibility, extendable to 45, with an Embassy average of 10 days plus up to two working days of transit from VFS. Temporary-stay (E) visas take 30 days and residence (D) visas 60 days, counted after any interview.

## Key takeaways

- Schengen visas: decision within 15 calendar days from admissibility, extendable up to 45; Embassy average 10 days.
- Files take up to two working days to travel from VFS to the Embassy.
- Temporary-stay (E) visas: 30 days; residence (D) visas: 60 days, both counted after any interview.
- Study visas D4 and E9: apply no later than 30 working days before travel.
- D1 and E8 work-visa appointments are requested by the Portuguese employer, not booked by you.

**According to VFS Global and the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi, a Portugal short-stay (Schengen) visa is decided within 15 calendar days from admissibility, extendable to 45, and the Embassy reports an average of 10 days. Add up to two working days for transit to the Embassy. Temporary-stay (E) visas take 30 days and residence (D) visas 60.**

### How long does each type of Portugal visa take?

D3 highly qualified applications are treated as a priority. And every E or D figure runs after the interview, if one is required.

### When does the clock actually start?
Not on the day you visit VFS. For short stays, the 15 days run from admissibility, meaning once the Embassy has received your file and accepted it for examination. Files take up to two working days to reach the Embassy from VFS, so a Monday submission may only start counting midweek.

For long stays, the D4 checklist is precise. The 60 days are counted from receipt at the Consular Section in New Delhi, which is up to 2 working days after the VFS submission, and Embassy holidays are excluded. Residents of Goa, Maharashtra and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu file with the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa through VFS Mumbai, Goa or Pune; everyone else files with the Embassy in New Delhi.

### What can stretch a short-stay decision towards 45 days?
The extension to 45 calendar days exists for files that need more work. Common triggers in the official guidance are:

- Interviews. Short-stay applicants at VFS Mumbai or Pune who have not travelled to a Schengen country in the last 3 years must attend a Skype interview with the Consulate, which VFS schedules. The Embassy or Consulate may also call any applicant.
- Requests for more documents, for example when financial papers do not match the trip.
- Residence questions. You must have lived legally in the jurisdiction for at least 6 months; someone only present there needs a credible, documented reason not to apply at home.
Speed and outcome are separate questions. European Commission data show that 20.3% of short-stay applications lodged at Portuguese consulates in India were not issued in 2025 (3,138 of 15,422), compared with 16.2% in 2024.

### How far ahead should you apply?
For a tourist trip, work backwards from your flight. Allow time to get a VFS appointment, two working days of transit, 15 calendar days for a decision and the possibility of an extension to 45. The Embassy average of 10 days is useful for planning, but it is not a promise. Hold a refundable or verifiable flight reservation rather than a paid ticket until the visa is decided.

For study, VFS India says D4 and E9 applicants should apply no later than 30 working days before travel; given the 60-day standard for D4, earlier is safer. Short-stay seasonal workers should apply no later than 15 working days before travel.

### Who books the appointment for work visas?
For two categories you cannot start the clock yourself. In the New Delhi jurisdiction, D1 subordinate-work appointments cannot be booked at VFS: your Portuguese employer requests them from the Embassy's visa department (visas.novadeli@mne.pt), and VFS then emails you the date. E8 seasonal-work appointments over 90 days are also requested by the employer through the Embassy, and groups of more than 10 are accepted only at VFS New Delhi. The New Delhi checklists confirm this; whether Goa-jurisdiction D1 and E8 files follow the same rule was not checked.

### What happens after the decision?
Track your application on the VFS website and collect the passport, or pay INR 750 for courier return. Residence visas such as D1, D4 and D6 are valid for 4 months with two entries, and you apply for your residence permit in Portugal during that time. Since 3 December 2025, if no AIMA appointment is available when a residence visa is issued, the sticker is printed without the appointment link and you request the appointment through AIMA's online contact form after arriving.

At the border, the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully implemented at Portuguese airports and seaports since 10 April 2026, so short-stay visitors are registered biometrically instead of stamped. Since 29 June 2026, the optional Travel to Europe app lets you pre-register travel details up to 72 hours before arrival.

To keep your trip dates flexible while you wait, Yatra For Fun's India office in Gurugram prepares verifiable flight reservations, hotel bookings, itineraries and cover letters, from INR 1,000 for a flight reservation to INR 3,000 for the full set. WhatsApp +91 95230 91018 or talk to us.

### Frequently asked questions

#### Can I pay extra for faster Portugal visa processing?
Neither the Embassy nor VFS India lists a paid fast-track for Portuguese visa decisions. VFS optional services such as SMS (INR 350) and the Premium Lounge (INR 3500) are centre services, not faster processing.

#### Is the Goa consulate faster than the New Delhi Embassy?
No separate processing times are published for the two offices; the 15-day Schengen standard applies to both. Short-stay applicants at VFS Mumbai or Pune without Schengen travel in the last 3 years must also attend a Skype interview, which adds a step.

#### How long is a Portugal student visa valid after it is issued?
A D4 study visa is valid for 4 months with two entries. During that period you apply to AIMA in Portugal for a residence permit, and family members can apply together with you.

#### What if my Portugal national visa is refused?
You can appeal. The Portuguese visa portal lists an appeal fee of EUR 75 for national visas, and the New Delhi Embassy says appeals are lodged through VFS for EUR 75 plus taxes.
