## TL;DR

German Missions in India want a recognised qualification, the employer's 'Declaration regarding a contract of employment', German health insurance and route-specific proof. The EU Blue Card needs a 2026 gross salary of EUR 50,700 (EUR 45,934.20 for shortage professions); the experience route needs EUR 45,630. Originals or German-certified copies are mandatory.

## Key takeaways

- EU Blue Card 2026 salary minimum: EUR 50,700 a year, or EUR 45,934.20 for MINT and other shortage professions.
- Indian degrees need anabin recognition (or a ZAB Statement of Comparability) and proof the course was completed in regular mode, not by distance learning.
- The work-experience route needs at least two years of matching experience within the last five years and a salary of at least EUR 45,630.
- Applicants aged 45 or older earning below EUR 55,770 a year must prove adequate pension provision.
- Bring originals or copies certified by a German authority; Indian notarised copies are not accepted.

**According to German Missions in India, an Indian work-visa applicant needs a passport, a Consular Services Portal application, the employer's 'Declaration regarding a contract of employment', a recognised degree or vocational qualification, German health insurance and, for the EU Blue Card, a gross salary of at least EUR 50,700 a year (EUR 45,934.20 for shortage professions) in 2026.**

### Which German work visa matches your profile?
Your documents depend on the route, so decide this first. German Missions in India list these work routes for Indians:

RouteWho it suitsHeadline requirementEU Blue CardGraduates with a German job offerGross salary of EUR 50,700 a year, or EUR 45,934.20 for MINT and shortage professionsSkilled worker with professional trainingHolders of vocational training recognised in GermanyRecognition of the training for GermanyEmployment with work experienceExperienced professionals whose qualification is recognised where obtainedTwo years' matching experience in the last five years; salary of at least EUR 45,630Recognition of professional qualificationsNurses, care workers and others with partial recognitionGerman A2 (care B2); livelihood of at least EUR 1,160 gross per monthOpportunity CardSkilled people looking for work without an offerFunds of at least EUR 1,091 per month
### Which documents does every work-visa file need?
Whatever the route, German Missions expect a common core:

- A valid passport and the application filed through the Consular Services Portal where your category is available there. The portal then gives you the link to book the on-site appointment; bookings without a completed portal pre-check are not accepted.
- The 'Declaration regarding a contract of employment' (Erklärung zum Beschäftigungsverhältnis), completed by your German employer, for job-offer routes.
- A one-page tabular CV.
- Your original degree or final convocation certificate and mark sheets for every semester. VFS Bengaluru returns originals after verification.
- A certificate of compulsory German health insurance from the start of employment, plus travel health insurance until then if needed.
- A professional practice licence if your profession is regulated in Germany, for example doctors, engineers or teachers.
Documents must be originals or copies certified by a German authority. Indian notarised copies are not accepted. Attestation or apostille of Indian documents is not required, but documents may be checked for genuineness.

### What extra proof does the EU Blue Card need?
The Blue Card checklist adds three tests to the core file:

- Salary: from 1 January 2026, at least EUR 50,700 gross a year for most professions, or EUR 45,934.20 for MINT and other shortage professions such as natural scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors and IT professionals.
- Degree recognition: your degree must be rated 'entspricht' or 'gleichwertig' in anabin, with the university rated 'H+' (or 'H+/-' with the programme listed). Otherwise, get a Statement of Comparability from ZAB.
- Regular-mode proof: Indian degree holders need confirmation from the university that the degree was completed on-site, in regular mode, not by distance learning, unless the distance programme was approved or ZAB has recognised it.
A Federal Employment Agency pre-approval is not required with a salary above EUR 50,700. For MINT jobs above EUR 45,934.20 it is optional and can shorten processing.

### What if you have training or experience instead of a degree?
The skilled worker checklist accepts two bases. With professional training, you need proof of completed vocational training and its recognition for Germany; the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce advises on recognition. With work experience, you need:

- At least two years of experience matching your qualification and the job, gained within the last five years.
- Professional training of at least two years recognised where you obtained it, or a degree that does not meet the academic route.
- A contract or offer with a salary of at least EUR 45,630 a year.
- A ZAB 'Statement on foreign professional qualifications' or anabin/ZAB recognition.
German Missions are clear that work experience alone, without formal training, is not enough for a work visa. If your qualification is only partly recognised, the recognition route applies instead: German at least A2 (B2 for care professions), a certificate not older than one year from Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, OeSD or telc, and a deficit notice, recognition partnership or invitation to a qualification analysis. That route is a paper application booked through VFS, with the VIDEX form printed twice and signed.

### What does the Opportunity Card ask for?
The Opportunity Card is for job searching, so there is no employer declaration. Instead, the checklist asks for proof of funds of at least EUR 1,091 per month, for example a blocked account or a formal declaration of support from someone in Germany, and German health insurance from the date of entry. You qualify either with a degree or training recognised in Germany, or by reaching the minimum points score in the portal questionnaire. Pearson PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL online results are not accepted as English proof in India.

### Where do you submit, and who must attend?
Your on-site appointment is at VFS or at the German mission, always within the jurisdiction of your place of residence:

Refusing to appear for a visa interview may lead to rejection. The national visa fee is 75 EUR / 8300 INR for applicants over 18.

### Checklist mistakes that sink work visas
- Notarised photocopies. Only originals or German-certified copies count.
- Missing pension proof. If you are 45 or older and earn below EUR 55,770 a year, you must show adequate pension provision.
- Distance-learning degrees without approval. Get the regular-mode confirmation before you apply.
- Relying on agents. German Missions warn that an agent's misconduct is your responsibility and may invalidate bookings or lead to refusal.
German Missions say most rejections result from incomplete or unverifiable documentation. The full Blue Card list is on the German Missions Blue Card checklist, and the skilled worker list on the employment with training or experience page.

### Frequently asked questions

#### How long does a German work visa take for Indians?
No fixed time is published; national visas may take several months and status inquiries are not answered in the first three months. With an employer's fast-track pre-approval under Section 81a Residence Act, the mission offers an appointment within three weeks and usually decides within three weeks of the complete application.

#### Which country do I pick in the portal if I live outside India?
For national visas, the Consular Services Portal asks for your country of residence, not your citizenship. An Indian living in Dubai, for example, selects the United Arab Emirates.

#### Can my spouse come with me on a German work visa?

No. German Missions state that attestation or apostille of Indian documents is not required, though documents may be verified for genuineness. You must bring originals or copies certified by a German authority.
