## TL;DR

Germany's Opportunity Card is a job-search visa: no offer needed, but a recognised qualification or points score and EUR 1,091 a month in funds. The UK Skilled Worker visa needs a licensed sponsor's offer at the higher of £41,700 or the going rate, English at B2, a fee from £819 and a £1,035 yearly healthcare surcharge.

## Key takeaways

- Opportunity Card: no job offer; recognised degree or training, or a minimum points score; EUR 1,091 a month in funds.
- UK Skilled Worker: licensed sponsor, certificate of sponsorship, salary of at least £41,700 or the going rate, English at B2.
- Fees: Germany 75 EUR / 8300 INR; UK £819 (up to 3 years) or £1,618 plus £1,035 a year healthcare surcharge.
- UK work visas are usually decided in 3 weeks; German national visas may take several months.
- With a German job offer, compare the EU Blue Card or skilled worker visa instead of the Opportunity Card.

**According to German Missions in India, the Opportunity Card lets you look for work in Germany without a job offer if you hold a recognised qualification or reach the points score, with EUR 1,091 a month in funds. GOV.UK's Skilled Worker visa needs a licensed sponsor's job offer paying the higher of £41,700 or the going rate.**

## Article

The two visas solve different problems. The Opportunity Card is a job-search visa: you go first and find an employer later. The Skilled Worker visa is a job visa: the employer comes first and the visa follows. Everything below is as published on the official sources, checked on 2026-10-15.

### Who qualifies for each visa?

#### Opportunity Card
The Consular Services Portal runs a "score counter" questionnaire that sends you down one of two options. Option 1 is for skilled workers whose university degree or professional training is recognised in Germany through anabin or ZAB; you upload mark sheets for every semester. Option 2 is for applicants who reach the minimum score, documented with proof of qualified work experience, a German certificate (Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, telc) or an English certificate to ALTE standard or TOEFL. Pearson PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL online results are not accepted as proof of English in India. The official points table was not available on the pages we checked, so rely on the portal's result.

#### UK Skilled Worker
You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor and must apply within 3 months of getting the CoS. 'Higher skilled' occupations qualify; 'medium skilled' ones only if they are on the Immigration Salary List or the Temporary Shortage List. The standard salary is the higher of £41,700 a year or the going rate. A lower salary of 70% to 90% of the going rate is possible if you are paid at least £33,400 and, for example, the job is on the Immigration Salary List or you are under 26, a recent graduate or in professional training. Some healthcare and education jobs on national pay scales need at least £25,000 or the going rate. Overseas recruitment of care workers and senior care workers closed from 22 July 2025.

The German route instead asks you to fund your own living costs for the search period.

### How long does each take from India?
UKVI's standard decision time for work visas, including Skilled Worker, is 3 weeks. Where offered, Priority Visa (£500) usually brings a decision within 5 working days, and Super Priority Visa (£1,000) usually by the end of the next working day after a weekday appointment.

German Missions in India publish no fixed time for national visas. They state that these may take several months depending on the category, and status inquiries are not answered within the first three months. Plan your notice period and savings with that in mind.

On outcomes, the Home Office reports a 93% grant rate for 'Worker' visas (Skilled Worker, Health and Care, Senior or Specialist Worker and other Worker routes) for Indian nationals in the year ending June 2026: 37,402 granted and 2,943 refused out of 40,345 decisions (provisional). No refusal statistics for German national visas for Indian applicants were found.

### Which visa fits which profile?
- UK job offer from a licensed sponsor at the threshold: the Skilled Worker visa is the direct route.
- Recognised degree, no offer yet, savings for the search: the Opportunity Card is built for this.
- German job offer already in hand: skip the Opportunity Card and compare Germany's EU Blue Card (EUR 50,700 a year, or EUR 45,934.20 for shortage professions) or the skilled worker visa with work experience (EUR 45,630 a year).
- Care worker: the UK route is closed to new overseas care workers; Germany's recognition-of-qualifications route asks for German at A2 (B2 for care professions) and EUR 1,160 gross a month.
- English proven only through PTE or Duolingo: that does not count for the Opportunity Card in India.

### What should you check before choosing?
- Whether anabin or ZAB rates your Indian degree or training as recognised, before relying on option 1.
- Whether the UK employer is a licensed sponsor and your occupation code is eligible after the 22 July 2025 changes.
- Whether your English meets B2, the level in force for new Skilled Worker applicants since 8 January 2026.
- Whether you can fund EUR 1,091 a month for as long as your search takes, or would rather move only with a signed contract.
