## Article

This guide is based on VFS Finland India, the Ministry's India checklist on finlandvisa.fi and the European Commission, as published on the official sources, checked on 2026-10-15. Indian citizens must apply for a visa before entering Finland; there is no visa on arrival and no eVisa. Our Finland visa overview for Indians has a summary of every category if you want the short version first.

### Which Finland visa do you need?
Your length of stay decides the route.

- Up to 90 days in any 180-day period: a Schengen short-stay visa. The Ministry's India checklists cover tourism, business, private visits to family and friends, seamen, culture, sports and study, family members of Finnish citizens, family members of EU/EEA/Swiss citizens, and seasonal work.
- More than 90 days: a residence permit from the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri), applied for online in Enter Finland. VFS Finland centres in India state that they accept short-stay Schengen visa applications only.
The Embassy of Finland in New Delhi handles visas for all of India, as well as Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

### How do you apply for a Finland visa, step by step?

#### Step 1: Pick your travel window
You cannot apply earlier than six months before the journey (nine months for seafarers). Processing takes up to 15 working days and can be extended, so give yourself several weeks.

#### Step 2: Fill the form on finlandvisa.fi
Complete the Schengen application on the Ministry's portal, then print it together with the checklist for your purpose of travel. Date and sign the form and stick one recent colour photo on it, taken against a light (white or off-white) background and not more than 6 months old.

#### Step 3: Book the VFS appointment and pay the service fee
Book on the VFS Finland India website after completing the visa form. Each family or group member needs their own appointment, and the VFS service fee of EUR 20 (INR 2,215) is paid online by card to confirm the slot. If you cannot get a slot, every centre also lists walk-in timings on Tuesday and Friday, 08:30 to 10:30, limited to the first 10 applicants each day.

#### Step 4: Assemble the documents
DocumentFinland's requirementPassportValid at least three months after the trip, issued within the previous 10 years, two blank pages; older passports with Schengen visas from the last 59 monthsInsuranceWhole Schengen area or worldwide, minimum EUR 30,000, covering illness, accident, medical repatriation and repatriation in case of deathItineraryTravel plan for all destinations and round-trip flight reservationsAccommodationProof for the whole stay in the Schengen areaEmploymentLetter on official letterhead, stamped and dated, stating position, salary, years of employment and approved leave dates; GST registration if self-employedFinancesCover letter, last 3 months' bank statement, ITR-V for the past two years, salary slips for 3 monthsBring originals plus copies. Supporting documents must be in English, Finnish or Swedish. Tourists add a free-form cover letter; family visitors add a signed invitation not older than 3 months and notarised proof of family ties.

#### Step 5: Attend the centre in person
Every applicant, including children of all ages, must appear in person. Pay the visa fee at the centre by card, UPI or cash. If your photo does not meet the requirements, the application is treated as incomplete and you will be asked to take new photos in the centre's booth.

#### Step 6: Wait for the decision and collect your passport
Collect your passport at the centre with the original VAC receipt and a copy of government photo ID, or have it couriered if you chose that at submission. A representative may collect it with a notarised authorisation letter where this is permitted.

### How long does it take, and how often are Indians refused?
Individuals get a decision in up to 15 working days and groups of more than 15 people in up to 20 working days; some business cases take 30 working days. The Embassy can extend processing to 30 days in high season or individual cases, excluding weekends and Finnish and Indian public holidays. A request for more documents or an interview also prolongs processing.

European Commission data shows a refusal rate of 13.9% for Schengen applications lodged at Finnish consulates in India in 2025 (2,450 visas not issued; 17,564 applications lodged), down from 20.0% in 2024. These are totals for all applicants that year, not a forecast for yours. Frequent travellers can benefit from the EU cascade: two Schengen visas lawfully used in the previous three years can lead to a two-year multiple-entry visa.

### Planning to study or work in Finland instead?
Long stays follow a separate track through Migri. Students apply to Migri in Enter Finland after admission and must show at least EUR 800 per month (EUR 9,600 per year). Employed people usually need a job offer first, and where no collective agreement applies, the 2026 salary floor is EUR 1,600 per month. Specialists and start-up entrepreneurs may qualify for a fast track processed in as little as two weeks.
