## TL;DR

The Embassy of Denmark in New Delhi requires overseas travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen countries, with at least 30,000 Euros of cover for accident, illness and medical emergency evacuation, for the entire trip including the arrival and departure dates. VFS publishes a list of approved insurers (July 2026). The Embassy does not set a premium; the visa fee is EUR 90 and the VFS fee INR 2090.

## Key takeaways

- Minimum cover is 30,000 Euros for all risks, including accident, illness and medical emergency evacuation.
- The policy must be valid in all Schengen countries and run from your arrival date to your departure date.
- VFS Global publishes the list of approved travel medical insurance companies (July 2026 list).
- Neither the Embassy nor VFS publishes a premium; the fixed visa costs are EUR 90 plus the INR 2090 VFS fee.
- Without valid insurance the file is incomplete, and a short-stay decision normally takes 15 days from receipt in New Delhi.

**Indians applying for a Denmark Schengen visa must hold overseas travel medical insurance valid in all Schengen countries, covering at least 30,000 Euros for accident, illness and medical emergency evacuation, for the entire trip including arrival and departure dates, according to the Embassy of Denmark in India. The Embassy does not fix the premium.**

## Article

Insurance is one of the few documents in a Danish file with hard numeric rules, so it is easy to get wrong. This page covers what the policy must say, where to buy it, what the rest of the application costs, and how insurance interacts with your flights and bank statement. Requirements are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For the whole application, see our Denmark visa guide for Indian applicants.

### What cover does the Embassy of Denmark require?
The Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi decides every short-stay application lodged at the 11 VFS centres in India. Its checklists and the VFS Denmark pages set four conditions for the insurance policy:

ConditionWhat your policy must showMinimum amountAt least 30,000 EurosRisks coveredAll risks, including accident, illness and medical emergency evacuationTerritoryValid for all Schengen countries, not Denmark alonePeriodThe entire trip, including the arrival and departure datesThe rule applies to every short-stay purpose on the VFS list: tourist, business, visiting family and friends, study, sports and cultural trips and transit visas. The Embassy also specifies that it is overseas travel medical insurance, so a domestic health policy that covers you in India does not meet the requirement.

### Which insurers can you buy from?
VFS Global publishes a list of Schengen-approved travel insurance companies for Denmark applicants in India; the current one is the Approved TMI Companies List of July 2026. Buying from a company on that list avoids an argument at the counter about whether your insurer is recognised. You can find the list and the rest of the tourist requirements on the VFS Denmark tourist visa page.

When you buy, ask the insurer for a certificate in English that states the sum insured in Euros, the words Schengen or all Schengen countries, medical evacuation, and the exact start and end dates. That one page is what the visa officer reads.

### How much does Denmark visa insurance cost?
Neither the Embassy nor VFS publishes a premium, because insurers set their own prices. Get two or three quotes for your exact dates from companies on the VFS list and compare them on the four conditions above, not on price alone.

What is fixed is the rest of the application cost:

The VFS fee is non-refundable.

### Do the policy dates have to match your flights?
Yes. The Embassy asks for cover for the entire trip including the arrival and departure dates, so the policy period should start no later than the day you land in the Schengen area and end no earlier than the day you leave it. Your flight reservation, which the checklist asks for as a return or round ticket reservation, sets those dates. If you visit several Schengen states, the checklist also wants the intra-Schengen reservations, and the insurance has to cover the full span.

The Embassy recommends not buying tickets before the visa is approved. A verifiable flight reservation gives you fixed dates to insure against without paying the full fare first. Your accommodation proof and the cover letter must show the same dates.

### How does insurance sit with your money proof?
Insurance is separate from the funds test, but the officer reads both together. Your original bank statement for the last three months, stamped and signed by the bank, must show means of DKK 350 per day if you stay in a private home or DKK 500 per day if you stay in a hotel. Add your income tax return acknowledgment for the last two assessment years and, if employed, three months' payslips and your leave letter.

The risk is a mismatch: a policy that ends before your return flight, or a trip that grows after you have insured it, leaves days uncovered.

### What happens if your insurance is wrong?
A short-stay application is normally decided within 15 days from the day the Embassy receives it. That clock excludes VFS submission and transport time. It can stretch to 30 days if further enquiry is needed and 45 days in exceptionally difficult cases. A missing or weak insurance certificate can lead to a request for more documents or to a refusal.

If the Embassy refuses because information was insufficient, you can ask it to reopen the case, or appeal to the Danish Immigration Service within 8 weeks of receiving the refusal. The Embassy may also ask you to attend an interview.

For context, Danish consulates in India refused 7.1% of Schengen applications in 2025 (1,178 visas not issued; 17,038 applications lodged), according to European Commission data. That is a rate for all short-stay applications, not a measure of insurance problems.

### Insurance mistakes to avoid
- Cover below 30,000 Euros, or a certificate that does not let the officer see the sum insured against that figure.
- A policy that names Denmark only instead of all Schengen countries.
- Start or end dates that leave out the arrival or departure day.
- An insurer that is not on the VFS approved list.
- Buying the policy before your dates are final, then changing the trip without updating it.
- Applying late in peak season: from March to September the Embassy recommends submitting at least 4 weeks before travel.

### Frequently asked questions

#### Is travel insurance mandatory for a Denmark tourist visa from India?
Yes. The Embassy of Denmark's checklist requires overseas travel medical insurance valid for all Schengen countries with at least 30,000 Euros of cover for the entire trip. It applies to tourist, business, family-visit, study and transit visas.

#### Can I buy Denmark visa insurance from any Indian insurer?
Buy from a company on the list of Schengen-approved travel insurance companies that VFS Global publishes for Denmark applicants; the current list is dated July 2026. The policy must still meet the 30,000 Euro, all-Schengen and full-trip conditions.

#### Is the Denmark visa fee refunded if I am refused?
The VFS service fee of INR 2090 is non-refundable, and the visa fee of EUR 90 is paid online when you apply. A refusal can be appealed to the Danish Immigration Service within 8 weeks, or reopened by the Embassy if it was refused for insufficient information.

#### Do I need insurance to change planes at a Danish airport?
