## TL;DR

A China Z visa starts with your employer: it must obtain the Notice for Foreigner's Work Permit before you apply. You then file online with the Chinese Visa Application Service Center for your state, submit your passport, give fingerprints and attend an interview. Fees for Indians run from Rs2900 (single entry) to Rs8800 (12 months or more multiple entry), plus the centre's service fee.

## Key takeaways

- Your employer must obtain the Notice for Foreigner's Work Permit online in China before you can apply for a Z visa.
- China has no job-seeker visa; the Z visa is the only work visa and needs the employer's notice.
- Z visa fees for Indians: Rs2900 single, Rs4400 double, Rs5900 six-month multiple, Rs8800 for 12 months or more.
- Z applicants give fingerprints and are interviewed at the Embassy (New Delhi jurisdiction) or, if informed, at the Consulate General.
- Work longer than 90 days requires a work residence permit applied for within 30 days of entry.

**According to the Chinese Embassy in India, the core requirement for a China Z work visa is a valid 'Notice for Foreigner's Work Permit' obtained by your China-based employer before you apply. You also need the online application, a passport valid 6 months with 2 blank pages, two 48mm x 33mm photos, fingerprints and usually an interview.**

The Z visa checklist is short on paper because most of the vetting happens in China before you apply. This checklist follows the order in which the documents are actually needed, from your employer's filing to your first month in China. All requirements and fees are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026, by the Chinese Embassy in India, the Chinese Visa Application Service Centers (CVASC) and municipal guides from Beijing and Shanghai. For other Chinese visa types, see our China visa guide for Indians.

### What must happen before you can apply for a Z visa?
Your employer goes first. It applies online through the Management and Service System for Foreigners Working in China, on the National Human Resources and Social Security Government Affairs Service Platform (www.12333.gov.cn). Only once the Notification Letter for Foreigner's Work Permit is issued can you start your visa application in India.

There is no shortcut through a job-seeker visa. The Embassy's list of ordinary visa types (C, D, F, G, J1, J2, L, M, Q1, Q2, R, S1, S2, X1, X2, Z) contains no job-seeker category.

Work permits are graded A, B or C. Under the points route described in the Shanghai Municipal Government's guide of August 2026, Category A needs at least 85 points and Category B 60 to 85 points. Points come from salary paid in China (up to 20), education (bachelor's 10, master's 15, doctorate 20), relevant experience (up to 20), Chinese-language ability (up to 5), age and extras such as a high-level overseas university (up to 5).

### Which documents does your employer need from you?
For the work permit itself, your employer will ask you to supply:

- the work permit application form;
- proof of work qualifications;
- your highest degree certificate and professional qualification certificates, authenticated by apostille (for documents from Apostille Convention countries) or by a Chinese embassy or consulate;
- a certificate of no criminal record;
- a health examination certificate;
- the job contract or a letter of dispatch;
- your valid passport and a bareheaded full-face photo taken within 6 months;
- documents for any accompanying family members.
Start on the degree authentication and the criminal-record certificate early. China publishes no official processing time for the work permit, so delays on your side push the whole timeline back.

Concealment or falsification may lead to rejection.

### How do submission, fingerprints and the interview work?
Since December 2025, every regular application starts online. You pay the centre's service fee through VFS Global payment pages, create an account on the Visa Center website, fill in the form and upload your documents. When the status shows 'online review completed', a confirmation email arrives. That email is not a visa approval.

Within 15 days of the confirmation, take your original passport to the Visa Center for your state. No appointment is needed, and Z applicants submit all documents at the centre. Fingerprints are collected for Z visas; the temporary exemption covers only short-term visas of up to 180 days.

- New Delhi Visa Center (all states not listed below): Z applicants attend an interview at the Embassy.
- Mumbai Visa Center (Maharashtra and Karnataka): interview at the Consulate General if informed.
- Kolkata Visa Center (Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal): interview at the Consulate General if informed.

### How much does a China work visa cost in rupees?
ChargeAmountSingle entryRs2900Double entryRs4400Six-month multiple entryRs590012 months or above multiple entryRs8800Express / urgent feeRs1800 / Rs2700 per applicationVisa Center service feeRs 2152 regular / Rs 3172 expressThe Embassy's notice of 4 January 2026 sets one fee table for Indian passport holders by number of entries, so a Z visa costs the same as any other ordinary visa with the same entries. These reduced fees run until 31 December 2026, and the Embassy decides how many entries you get. If the visa is refused, the visa and express fees are refunded through the centre, but the service fee is not.

For qualified applications, the Embassy usually takes 4 working days (regular) or 3 working days (express), but the interview can add time.

### What paperwork waits after you land in China?
- Work of up to 90 days: work within the time shown on the Z visa.
- Work of more than 90 days: apply for a residence permit for work within 30 days of entry, and work only within the work permit's validity.
- Residence permit file: passport, Foreigner Visa Application Form, a 33x48mm bareheaded colour photo on a white background, and documents supporting the purpose.
- Later deadlines: request extensions 30 days before expiry, and update a new passport on the permit within 10 days.

### Which checklist errors send a Z file back?
- Applying before the work permit notice is issued.
- Filing at the wrong Visa Center for your state.
- Letting an agent put their phone number or email on your form.
- Uploading a photo with glasses, a hat or a non-neutral expression, which can get the application rejected or returned.
- Withdrawing and expecting to revive the file: a returned application cannot be revived, so an urgent traveller must start a new one.
