## TL;DR

A Chinese tourist (L) visa has no fixed length for Indians: the visa officer decides the validity period, number of entries and duration of each stay. First-time applicants generally get a single-entry visa, and stays are counted from the day after entry. Extensions are requested inside China at least 7 days before the permitted stay ends.

## Key takeaways

- Validity period is the window to enter China; duration of stay is the days allowed after each entry.
- Duration of stay is counted from the day after you enter.
- First-time applicants generally get single entry; multiple entries need a Chinese visa from the past five years.
- Reduced fees run until 31 December 2026: Rs 2,900 single, Rs 4,400 double, Rs 5,900 six-month multiple, Rs 8,800 12-month-plus multiple.
- Extensions are filed with the local public security exit and entry authority at least 7 days before your stay ends.

**According to the Embassy of China in India, a tourist (L) visa has no fixed length. The visa officer decides its validity period, number of entries and duration of each stay, counted from the day after entry. First-time Indian applicants generally get single entry; multiple-entry visas for six months, or 12 months and above, cost Rs 5,900 and Rs 8,800.**

So the honest answer to 'how long can I stay in China' is: as long as the visa you are actually issued allows, and not a day more. This guide explains the three values that decide it, what each entry option costs and what to do if your plans change. Rules and fees are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. For the full application process and checklists, see our China visa guide for Indian passport holders.

### What do validity, entries and duration of stay mean on a Chinese visa?
The Embassy uses three separate terms, and most overstay problems start when travellers mix them up.

- Validity period is the time within which you can enter China. It is not the time you can stay.
- Number of entries is how many times you can enter during that validity period: single, double or multiple.
- Duration of stay is the number of days you may remain after each entry. It is counted from the day after you enter.
Staying beyond the duration of stay without an extension is illegal overstay, as the Embassy's visa FAQ of April 2025 puts it. A visa that is valid for several months can still allow a short stay per entry, so plan your return flight around the duration of stay, not the validity date.

The Embassy also states that the visa type, number of entries, validity and duration of stay are decided by the visa officer according to your purpose, the length of stay you need and your documents. The Embassy may ask for more documents or an interview. Check all three values on your visa as soon as you collect your passport.

### Will a first-time Indian applicant get single or multiple entry?
Usually single entry. The Embassy's general rules say first-time applicants are generally issued a single-entry visa. To ask for double or multiple entries, you show a Chinese visa obtained in the past five years (a copy of the visa page) and enough passport validity.

Passport validity matters for every applicant. The common checklist asks for an original passport valid for at least 6 months with 2 or more blank visa pages, a copy of the information pages, and any expired passports from the last 5 years.

Tourism is not the only short-stay category. Family visits to Chinese citizens or permanent residents use the Q2 visa, and visits to foreigners working or studying in China use the S2 visa; both cover stays of up to 180 days. If your trip is really a family visit, choosing the right category matters more than asking for a long tourist stay.

### How much does each validity option cost?
The fee depends on the number of entries, not the purpose of travel. The Embassy's fee notice of 4 January 2026 extended reduced fees for Indian passport holders until 31 December 2026.

Visa issuedVisa fee (Indian passport)Single entryRs 2,900Double entryRs 4,400Six months multiple entryRs 5,90012 months or above multiple entryRs 8,800Group visa, each applicantRs 1,800Express / urgent fee (extra)Rs 1,800 / Rs 2,700 per applicationThe visa fee is paid at the Visa Center: cash or demand draft in New Delhi, cash only in Mumbai and Kolkata. The Visa Center's own service fee is separate: Rs 2,152 for regular service or Rs 3,172 for express, paid online before you submit. It is non-refundable and adjusted every quarter with the USD-INR exchange rate. If the Embassy rejects an application, it charges no visa or express fee and both are refunded through the visa centre.

Timing is quick once the file is complete. The Embassy usually processes qualified applications in 4 working days (regular) or 3 working days (express). In New Delhi and Kolkata, collection is expected on the 6th working day for regular and the 4th for express.

### Can you extend your stay once you are in China?
Yes, but not through the Embassy in India. According to the Ministry of Commerce of China's 2024 guide, you apply to the local public security exit and entry authority in China at least 7 days before your permitted stay ends. Leave it later and you risk an overstay.

An extension is a separate decision, not an automatic right. Plan the trip so that the original duration of stay covers it, and treat an extension as a fallback for genuine changes such as illness or a cancelled flight.

### Is there a visa-free or on-arrival option for a short stop?
Not for a holiday. India is not on China's unilateral 30-day visa-exemption list (as of 17 February 2026), not on the 57-country list for 240-hour visa-free transit (August 2026), and not among the 59 countries allowed visa-free entry to Hainan (Embassy notice, August 2024).

The only visa-free option for Indians is the 24-hour visa-free transit to a third country while you stay inside the port's restricted area. China's 'port visa' is not a tourist visa on arrival either. It is for ordinary-passport holders with an urgent need, such as urgent business, visiting a critically ill relative or attending a funeral, who could not get a visa in time. It is issued at designated ports (99 ports in 72 cities), and the National Immigration Administration recommends getting preliminary approval before you travel.

### What should your L visa file show to match the stay you want?
Because the officer sets the stay from your purpose and documents, your file should describe one consistent trip. The tourist (L) checklist asks for:

- A tour itinerary covering the whole stay
- A hotel order
- An airline ticket order
- Bank proof: the CVASC New Delhi notice of 9 April 2026 asks for personal savings-account statements for the most recent 3 months with a minimum consistent monthly balance of INR 1 lakh, or a personal deposit certificate of a similar amount made at least 3 months before applying
- An invitation letter from a relevant entity or individual, when necessary
Make the dates on the itinerary, hotel order and flight booking agree with each other and with the form. A verifiable flight reservation is generally safer than a non-refundable ticket bought before the decision. Minors may use a parent's or guardian's bank statement with an authorisation letter signed by the account holder.

### Mistakes that shorten or spoil a China trip
- Reading the validity date as your stay limit. The validity period only tells you when you can enter.
- Counting your arrival day as day one. The duration of stay starts from the day after entry.
- Asking for multiple entries on a first application without a Chinese visa from the past five years.
- Applying with less than 6 months of passport validity or fewer than 2 blank pages.
- Leaving an extension request to the last week. The authority wants it at least 7 days before your stay ends.
- Relying on transit rules meant for other nationalities. Indians qualify only for the 24-hour transit inside the port's restricted area.
