## TL;DR

Most problems in Canadian visitor visa files from India are avoidable: use the IRCC Portal, wait for the Biometric Instruction Letter before booking VFS, show how your money and job tie you to India, and do not buy flights until the visa is in your passport. The fee is CAN$100 plus CAN$85 biometrics, and IRCC's posted time for India is 29 days.

## Key takeaways

- Apply online through the IRCC Portal; applications from India are handled by the visa office in New Delhi.
- Book VFS biometrics only after the IRCC Biometric Instruction Letter; since February 2026 you must upload it.
- IRCC recommends travel history, itinerary, bank statements, employer letter and invitation letter.
- The visitor visa is not electronic: you cannot travel until IRCC places it in your passport.
- IRCC's global visitor visa refusal rate (all nationalities) was 51% in 2025.

**Avoidable mistakes in Canadian visitor visa applications from India include trying to book a VFS biometrics slot before IRCC's Biometric Instruction Letter arrives, uploading thin evidence of funds and ties, and buying flights before the visa is in your passport. IRCC's posted processing time for visitor visas from India is 29 days; the fee is CAN$100 plus CAN$85 for biometrics.**

## Article

IRCC told a parliamentary committee that its global visitor visa refusal rate, across all nationalities, was 51% in 2025, after 54% in 2024 and 39% in 2023. IRCC does not publish an India-only figure on that page. With refusal that common, small errors matter. Below are six avoidable mistakes, each paired with the IRCC or VFS rule that fixes it. Rules are as published on the official sources, checked on 15 October 2026. Our Canada visa guide for Indians has the full process.

### 1. Which channel and office should you use?
The mistake: looking for a consulate counter or a paper form. Canadian visitor visas must be applied for online through the IRCC Portal. Paper applications are only for people who cannot apply online, for example for disability reasons, or who travel on a refugee, stateless or non-citizen travel document.

Applications from India are handled by the visa office in New Delhi. The Consulates General of Canada in Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Mumbai handle general enquiries only; their in-person operations are temporarily suspended. VFS Global is the Government of Canada's exclusive service provider for the ten Visa Application Centres in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.

### 2. Why can't you book a VFS biometrics slot straight away?
The mistake: booking a VAC visit before IRCC asks for biometrics. After you apply and pay, wait for IRCC's Biometric Instruction Letter. VFS India moved biometrics booking to its Appointment Management System in February 2026, and appointments from 24 February 2026 require you to upload that letter.

Booking the biometrics appointment is free. There is no separate VAC fee for giving biometrics: the CAN$85 biometrics fee you pay IRCC online covers fingerprints and photo at the VAC and moving your documents between IRCC and that centre. For a family of two or more applying together, biometrics are capped at CAN$170.

### 3. What proof of funds and ties does IRCC want to see?
The mistake: uploading a single bank balance and nothing else. IRCC's visitor visa document list recommends:

- Travel history, including previous visas and stamps.
- An itinerary for the Canada trip.
- Bank statements showing enough money to support yourself during your stay.
- An employer letter confirming a stable job you will return to.
- A letter of invitation from your host, if you have one.
Follow the personalised document checklist the IRCC Portal generates, and check whether the New Delhi visa office requires anything extra. Upload a clear passport copy too: IRCC's list asks for a passport valid at least 6 months from your planned travel date.

### 4. Which VFS charges are optional?
The mistake: paying for services you do not need. VFS India's charges effective 1 May 2026 are paid at the VAC in INR by cash or UPI and are non-refundable:

Optional VFS serviceCharge (incl. taxes)When you actually need itPackage transmissionINR 604If you give biometrics at one VAC and submit documents at anotherAssisted Service, paper applicationINR 529Only for permitted paper applicationsOne-way courier (passport return)INR 858If you cannot collect in personTwo-way courierINR 1,716If you want pickup and returnPremium LoungeINR 4,767Comfort only; it is not part of the IRCC decisionSMS updatesINR 179OptionalVFS has announced new service charges from 1 November 2026, with amounts not yet published as of 15 October 2026, so check the VFS page on the day you pay. Instead of paying for courier, you can collect the decision envelope at the VAC as a walk-in, Monday to Friday 9:00–17:00.

### 5. When is it safe to book flights?
The mistake: buying tickets on the strength of the posted processing time. IRCC's figure for India is 29 days (data last updated October 14, 2026), but IRCC told a parliamentary committee in April 2026 that posted times look backward and do not reflect actual processing times. Applications needing more information take longer.

The Canadian visitor visa is also not electronic. If approved, you submit your passport, through a VAC if you choose, and you cannot travel until IRCC places the visa in it. Passport submission at a VAC needs a prior appointment. Use a verifiable flight reservation in the application and buy the ticket once the visa is in hand.

Watch your passport expiry as well. IRCC sets visa validity at generally up to 10 years, or until your passport or biometrics expire, whichever comes first, so a passport close to expiry gets you a short visa.

### 6. Are you applying for the right visa for the visit?
- Parents and grandparents on long stays. The super visa allows stays of up to 5 years at a time but needs private health insurance from a Canadian or OSFI-authorised insurer, valid at least 1 year with at least CAN$100,000 emergency cover, paid in full or by instalments (quotes are not accepted), plus an immigration medical exam. IRCC's posted time from India is 77 days.
- Families of five or more. The visa fee is capped at CAN$500 if everyone applies at the same time and place.
- Business visitors. Show you plan to stay less than 6 months and that your main place of business is outside Canada.
- Children travelling without both parents. Add a letter authorising the minor to travel.
