# Austria Visa Mistakes Indians Make (and How to Avoid Them)

> Seven checklist misses that trip up Austria visa files from India, from unstamped bank statements to insurance outside the approved list, and what the VFS checklist asks for instead.

## TL;DR

Avoidable problems on an Austria visa file from India come down to the checklist. Apply at least 15 working days ahead, use bank statements stamped and signed by the bank, buy insurance only from the approved list in force since 01 January 2026, and use ICAO photos in the right visa category.

## Key takeaways

- Apply no earlier than 6 months and at least 15 working days (VFS) before travel; processing can stretch to 45 calendar days.
- Original bank statements for the last three months must be stamped and signed by the bank; ITR needs the barcode.
- From 01 January 2026, insurance is accepted only from the approved Indian insurer list, with minimum EUR 30,000 cover.
- Stays over 6 months, job seeker, Working Holiday and Au-Pair visas go to the Embassy in person, not VFS.
- The visa fee and the INR 2479 VFS charge are non-refundable if the visa is refused.

**The Austria visa mistakes worth avoiding are checklist misses: applying with less than 15 working days before travel, bank statements not stamped and signed by the bank, travel insurance from an insurer outside the approved list (in force since 01 January 2026), non-ICAO photos and the wrong visa category. Each one can be fixed before your VFS appointment.**

## Article

This list is built from the VFS Global checklists for Austria and the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi, with fees and processing times as published on those official sources, checked on 10 October 2026. Keep in mind who does what: VFS takes in the file and returns your passport, while the Embassy alone assesses it, so getting past the VFS counter is not the same as having a complete file. For category-by-category requirements, see our Austria visa page for Indian travellers.

### Quick check: the mistake and what the checklist says

### Getting the timing wrong
Short-stay applications can be submitted no earlier than 6 months and at least 15 days before travel; VFS sets its minimum at 15 working days. Processing is usually 15 working days from receipt by the Embassy, but the tourism checklist warns it can be extended up to 45 calendar days when further scrutiny is needed. Filing right at the minimum leaves you no margin if that extension happens, so aim for several weeks of buffer.

The other timing trap is buying flights early. Embassies generally advise against buying non-refundable tickets before the visa decision. The checklist asks for a round-trip flight reservation or travel itinerary, which a verifiable flight reservation satisfies without locking in a fare; requirements vary, so check the official checklist for your category.

### Bank, ITR and job papers that miss the checklist
The checklist is specific about the format of financial documents, not only their content. Match yours line by line:

- Bank statements: originals for the last three months, stamped and signed by the bank. VFS marks this as mandatory, so a plain net-banking download without the bank's stamp and signature does not meet it.
- Income tax: ITR with barcode for the last 2 years.
- Employed: salary certificate for the last 3 months, your employment contract and a company NOC to leave, with the official email address of you or HR.
- Self-employed: GST certificate, Udhyog Aadhar Memorandum, Import Export Certificate, Certificate of Incorporation or similar.
- Retired: pension statements for the last 3 months. Students: proof of enrolment.

### Insurance bought from the wrong company
As of 01 January 2026, for applications lodged in India, travel medical insurance is accepted only if it is issued by a company on the approved list published through VFS. A policy from any other insurer fails, however good the cover. Beyond the insurer, the policy must:

- cover at least EUR 30,000;
- be valid throughout the territory of the Schengen member states;
- cover the entire period of your intended stay or transit.
For a multiple-entry visa, you prove insurance for the first intended visit and sign a statement of awareness for later stays. We could not retrieve the approved-insurer PDF when we checked, so open the current list on the VFS site before paying any premium.

### Passport, photo and biometrics slips
Your passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years, be valid at least three months after your intended departure from the Schengen area, have at least two blank pages and carry no alteration or handwritten amendment on the data page. Include copies of the data pages, the last page, pages with earlier visas and travel, and any previous Schengen visas.

The photo must meet ICAO criteria: 35x45 mm, colour, plain light-coloured background, no more than 6 months old, with your face taking up 70-80% of it. Eyes open, no tinted lenses or flash reflection on glasses, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, and no head covering unless for religious reasons with the full face visible from chin to forehead. You must be alone in the picture.

Biometrics, meaning ten fingerprints and a photograph, are collected in person unless they were taken within the last 59 months. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints.

### Choosing the wrong category or the wrong desk
- Visiting relatives or friends is a Visitor Visa, which needs an invitation with the host's address, contact details and your intended period of stay, plus evidence of the host's legal residence, and an EVE where applicable.
- Business travel needs an invitation from the Austrian company or an Electronic letter of guarantee (EVE). Training, voluntary work or project work additionally needs AMS permission obtained by the inviting company.
- Transit visas are listed only for citizens of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, so they are not an option on an Indian passport.
- Anything beyond VFS: residence permits over 6 months, job seeker, Working Holiday Programme and Au-Pair visas are applied for in person at the Embassy.
- Children travelling with one parent need an original notarised NOC from the other parent, and both parents' NOC if the child travels alone, with copies of the parents' passports or ID.

### Fee surprises: exchange rate and refunds
The adult short-stay fee is EUR 90 / INR 9810, children aged 6 to 12 pay EUR 45 / INR 4905 and children under 6 pay nothing. A long-term D visa costs EUR 195 / INR 21260 for adults. The rupee amounts follow the exchange rate and can change at every month end, so check the figure close to your appointment. The VFS service charge is INR 2479 including GST. Both the visa fee and the service charge are non-refundable if the visa is refused. VFS accepts cash, Visa, MasterCard and RuPay; UPI is listed only for short-stay C visa payments.
